We booked into the Waverly for two nights in Feb 2008, we did however make a slight mistake, we booked flights and didn’t check hotel prices, and then we realised from prices that there must be an event on. Anyway, it was the six nations, Scotland vs France, so the prices were through the roof, one of the best deals we got was through this hotel. I had read some mixed reviews and expected the worst, but to be honest things were pretty good in our experience. The first night (Friday) was only £59, the second a lot more due to the rugby. For that sort of price this hotel will be hard to beat for value (we booked online). The best thing about the hotel is its location, which suited us perfectly. It is opposite the Scott monument on Princess street, 1 min from Waverly station, good for the airport bus stop also. So you have the main busy shopping street on your doorstep as well as Rose Street for pubs and food places. It is also only about 10 mins walk to the old town and Royal Mile.
The hotel is maybe a little run down but our room was fine, clean and the bathroom pretty good. The bed was comfy and although not large the room was big enough for us for a weekend. The TV was a bit poor but we didn’t really care. We did have one problem with noise from the adjacent room, I could hear the tv at 2.00am, one tap on the wall soon sorted that out! Apart from that it was very quiet in our room.
Breakfast was good, full English type for me, tasted good. Nice view of the Castle from the breakfast room. The guy in the breakfast room was always very lively and jolly. They only serve breakfast after 8.00am, I would have expected it to be earlier, unless it different on other days. We tried the bar once, it was not the most exciting bar but seemed relatively well priced. Other things to note, the lift is small and the check-in counter could get busy but the staff always seemed courteous and pleasant.
With a little work this could be a great hotel, but for what we paid I was more than happy. I thought a bout giving 4 stars but as a hotel I think 3 is more realistic, but it isn't as bad a some people made out.
Edinburgh itself was a fantastic destination for a long weekend as a couple, especially if you like good food, pubs and whisky. It is also great for walking, not too large and you get to see a lot if you are prepared to walk.
