“charming and unusual hotel in central Edinburgh”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 27, 2008

Loved this hotel, so much better than the normal plastic cloned commercial places at a similar rate. Loads of atmosphere, I was there on my own but would love to return for romantic weekend with my husband sometime. Excellent position - so close to the centre of the city. Staff were very helpful. But most of all l really liked the the whole opulent feel of the place.

I stayed 4 nights here, 2 in a single room, 2 in a double room the latter with my partner. We found the hotel very good, especially considering the reduced rate we paid. It was quite plush with an effort made to decorate it in an unusual way. I liked it a lot. The only thing is, in a single room, the black damask curtains, dark bedspread, one black wall and black wardrobe, although smart, made it a little creepy and macabre. The staff were v.v. friendly and helpful, the breakfast was an extensive continental breakfast, bathroom small but who cares?, it was clean, new-looking, massive dinner-plate shower head. Fridge/minibar would have been nice seeing it's a 4*. Lounge very pleasant. Excellent location, short walk from Princes Street.

  • Liked — Decor in all rooms other than the single
  • Disliked — Decor in the single

Me and my husband stayed at this hotels sister hotel and had a very bad experiance my wedding and engagement ring was stolen yes stolen out of the room by the maid!!! When the owner was rang he was not bothered what so ever. We have yet to hear from him being home 1 week. My rings were found and returned and the maid was sacked but no refund will be given even though his staff stole my rings and my weekend away as i have small children and this was the first weekend away me and my husband have had since getting married. Please be careful if you stop at any of the BALLANTRAE HOTELS!!!!!!

Liked this hotel. Very individual. The owner obviously is very artistic with the quirky interior design. Went from there to the Abstract restaurant. Fantastic one night in Edinburgh.

Quite an avant-garde experience. A big improvement on the more commercial hotels.

  • Liked — the funky design
  • Disliked — I had only one night

We were a 9 room party of rugby fans up for the England v Scotland match and had so many changes, cancellations and additions but the hotel was fabulous, patient and understanding. The rooms very well appointed, breakfast substantial and varied. The staff were extremely helpful, courteous and made everyone feel welcomed, especially Steph on our arrival. They even arranged free parking at a sister hotel, a rarity in Edinburgh!! We will be going back on our own just to visit Edinburgh.

  • Liked — Lovely rooms and friendly efficient staff
  • Disliked — Decor was a bit dark, they needed lighter lampshades but that was it

My boyfriend and I have just returned from a weekend away at The Albany Hotel. We arrived at the hotel full of hope despite the negative reviews that we read on this site. Unfortunately it appeared that we really should have listened to previous visitors......

The bathroom was tiny and the bedroom dark and cramped. The hotel prides itself on the fact that there are plasma TV's in each room which may be true, but they dont work and have no remote controls!!!!!! We spoke to staff on the Friday about this and were told that an engineer would be out to fix the problem on the Saturday. After a lovely full day exploring the beautiful city we wanted to stay in the hotel in the evening with a bottle of wine and the TV. Upon arriving back at the hotel we spoke to the only helpful member of staff, Sandra. She explained that no-one would be out to fix the problem until Monday morning although she at least apologised for the inconvenience!!

We spoke to the on duty manager upon check out on Sunday about the disappointment we had about the TV's. We were told that there was nothing she could do, and we were told that the proprietor was away for the weekend and we would have to call back on Monday morning to speak to him. Despite numerous calls to the hotel to try and speak to him he has avoided our calls! We have been offered a free night stay if we pay for 2 nights at the hotel in the future.. Needless to say we have declined. You'd not get us to stay there again if you paid us!!!

We had been made to pay for the hotel in full upon check in despite them having our credit cards details and so we were in a position that we could not even dispute payment with them!

There were signs of mice in the bedroom although we thankfully didn't see any!

The continental breakfasts was VERY basic in a horrible dining room in the dingy basement. The waitresses did not want to be there, and who could blame them!!

The only positive thing that we could say about the hotel was that it was in a good location..

This place is like Faulty Towers and should be avoided at all costs!!! It is certainly not a 4 star hotel!!
