“Lovely Quirky Hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 29, 2011

Stayed for one night at the Ballantrae Albany as the weather for driving home was too bad. Glad we did, all in it cost only £70 for a double room including an excellent continental breakfast. The hotel is central but quiet, welcoming and cosy. I hate hotels that are standard boring and have no character...couldn't say that about this one. Our room was vaguely gothic with black and burgundy furnishing with two gorgeous big black and white chairs. The bathroom was spotless with a good shower. There was tea and coffee making facilites and a flat screen tv. The room was not too warm which I considered a bonus as I hate overheated stuffy rooms. Breakfast was in a lovely room, you could have a full cooked breakfast...I think there may be a small charge for this. We had the one included in the price which was great...fresh fruit, croissants, selection of cold meat, cheese, cereal and lovely pastries.Would definately go back....particularly in winter for the sheer cosyness of it!

I paid 100 euro a night for this hotel in august. Honestly I think that it is to much for what you get for this 3-star hotel.

At first the room smelled: a combination of cleaningsmell and sweat. And the shower didn't work and took me one day (three times asking reception) before somebody came and fixed it.

Bed are very soft. Breakfast is good. Location is good. Besides the shower personel is friendly.

Eventualy everything was fixed and I enjoyed Endinburgh very much.

It is such a shame that the hotel is a bit tired. Just a little bit of TLC it could be fabulous!!

The 1st room I was offered was awful dark and depressing with the ceiling wall paper hanging off of the ceiling, the 2nd was identical but not quite so shabby (no paper hanging off the ceiling) the 3rd was better.. we ended up with a spacious room with a large bathroom still tired but better than the other 2. It seems that some rooms are better than others. The hotel was lovely and warm...

If you get a good room the hotel represents excellent value for money.

The reception staff were very helpful especially when I said I really didn't like the room I had been allocated.. Breakfast was great the 1st morning however the service fell apart on the 2nd morning and picked up again on the 3rd.. All the hot breakfasts are cooked to order and were lovely..
The hotel is in a great position for shopping and visiting all of the sites. Lots of restaurants to chose from..
Taxi fare from the airport is approximately £20.00 each way..

Fantastic location, room spacious and very quiet, restaurant menu average but the food is all fresh and delicious. The really stand out feature was the staff, at check in, during the day, and also in the middle of the night if you are suffering from jet lag.....Jim will make a great cup of coffee and have a chat. Overall excellent value for money.

Can't talk more highly about the bedrooms! Great space, great bed, bathroom was fantastic and very quiet. If you plan on staying in, then this is a good choice.

Breakfast, well........done in the basement, not very bright. Overly stuffy, and the continental buffet looked like it was the 1960s. Hot cook breakfast was quick, but not great looking. Taste.....well, salt and pepper go a long way.

The central location of this hotel is great and I had no issues with the cleanliness ot my room or the friendliness of the staff. The decor and lighting is very atmospheric but absolutely useless if you want to work or read so if you are on business and will want to work in your room - go elsewhere. ( I asked for an extra desk lamp so I could work, and the receptionist did her best to find one, but it wasnt to be had).
The cooked breakfast was lovely but beware the cheese - crispy round the edges, croissants weren't fresh and coffee was cold. The rate for my room was good and that's just as well as I would have grudged a 4 star rate and would have at least have expected to be able to see in my room!!

Anyone who knocks this hotel is VERY hard to please! We had a fantastic two night stay and we have stayed in many fabulous hotels all over the world.
The room was nice but what made our stay was the staff who were fabulous!!
Nothing was too much trouble and Jamie and Jeff were an abosolute credit and asset to the Albany.
From two absolute critics ------ WELL DONE !!!.............. Antony and Jill

Room Tip: Ground floor is a good bet!!!
