Owner description: Please note: while Modern One is being rehung for our upcoming GENERATION exhibition there's still an opportunity to catch our highly acclaimed JD Fergusson exhibition at Modern Two. Home to Scotland's outstanding national collection of modern and contemporary art, the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art comprises two buildings, Modern One and Modern Two. Set in beautiful parkland close to the Water of Leith you can explore sculpture by major artists such as Ian Hamilton Finlay, Henry Moore, Rachel Whiteread and Barbara Hepworth. On permanent display is a fascinating recreation of Eduard Paolozzi's studio, as well as his 7.3M tall sculpture, Vulcan, that dominates the cafe. Also in Modern Two is The Stairwell Project, a large-scale, permanent work by 2009 Turner Prize winner Richard Wright. The collection at the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art ranges from 1900s to the present day, including works by Matisse, Picasso, Vuillard and Dix, as well as a superb selection of paintings by Scottish artists such as Peploe, Fergusson, Gillies and Redpath. Also on display are postwar works by Bacon, Freud, Davie, Hockney and Leger and more recent pieces by Turner prize winning artists Richard Wright and Martin Creed, alongside Karla Black, Douglas Gordon and Tracey Emin to name a few.

“Wonderful”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 27, 2013

Jusr off the beaten track means this is not so busy as it's partner which is a shame as it is wonderful. Lovely clean, open and airy, you can spend hours wandering around here. Worth a visit.

“Always Excellent”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 2, 2013

The exhibition at time of writing is devoted to the works of S. J. Peploe and doesn't disappoint. Well curated, with excellent information notes (I'd forgotten my reading glasses and so used the large print books available in each room), this exhibition really revealed Peploe's style and techniques as they changed over his lifetime.
The Gallery itself is set in beautiful tranquil grounds not too far from the city centre.
There is an excellent cafe serving good food at a reasonable prices.
I was disappointed to note that the gigantic ceiling-high work of Vulcan by Paolozzi is now surrounded by tables, as an extension of the cafe - I feel this is an insult to the piece and demeans it.

“Fabulous exhibition of S J Peploe”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 27, 2012

Brilliantly curated exhibition with wonderful information (thank heavens for the large print books as the labels are verysmall!). Well staged and lit and beautifully laid out. A highlight of our tour.
