My husband and I stayed in a superior room with a king sized bed and views over Leith harbour. Having read the reviews about the Hotel's breakfast being poor and slow we opted not to have breakfast but use the fridge in the room and take our own!

The room was nice, traditionally Scottish in decor, clean and very quiet. All the usual Mal branding was in evidence, which we like and as always they are not cheap but you know what your going to get - we've always had good qualiy rooms and service staying with them.

We ate in the restaurant and had good food and wine.I don't agree with the calculated 'discretionary' service charge so we just wiped that off and paid the difference and tipped the waiter direct.

We booked a taxi with the desk and they were helpful. As with other travellers it's cheaper to pick up a black cab which is easier in the centre of Edinburgh, than at the hotel out in Leith. Leith does have a michelin starred restaurant so if you can get into book you could eat there.

We stayed here on our way back from T in the Park - well worth the stay - really appreciated a bit of luxury!

Got a brilliant deal on the hotel.

We arrived late at night (11:30 pm) which wasn't a problem and managed to get a complimentary late check out as we arrived so late.
The room was spacious, very well kept and decorated to a high standard. It didn't feel like just another chain. The bed was huge, very comfortable. The room was a good size too along with the fair sized bathroom.

Room service was not over priced. Staff were very friendly and very happy to help.

The breakfast was no less than excellent. Great choice of continental breakfast and cooked.

Excellent laid back atmosphere in a gorgeous building. I can't wait until our next visit!

Only faults were that the shower wasn't consistently hot and that you had to pre charge your debit or credit card before you check out (even if it is for more than the cost of the room) which can put you out of pocket for the rest of your stay. Not too fussed on that policy.

Otherwise - spot on!

I spent several two-week stretches in the Malmaison Edinburgh, and while the rooms were comfy, I'm certainly glad my employer picked up the tab.

The check-in staff were, erm, "young", and, y'know, like, acted like it. And don't get me started on the noise. If you like amorous 40-somethings coming upstairs from the bar and having a bit of a go in the corridor, then folks, this place is for you.

Finally, just hope there's nobody in the hotel decides to light up a fag inside their room at 5am. The fire alarm *will* go off and create an evacuation of the entire place. The sight of that German hausfrau standing out in front of the hotel in her sheer nightie shivering at the cold wind coming down The Shore has been burnt indelibly into my brain.

Pleasant enough but we won't be back

We managed to get a rate of £130 per night which is not bad for Edinburgh. However, we were a bit disappointed with the hotel. As someone else has written we were required to make a £50 deposit on our credit card (never had that before anywhere and I wouldn't have used the overpriced minibar anyway).

On walking into our room I saw a bottle of wine and two glasses and though it was a nice touch only to find, on closer inspection, a price tag. I thought that was rather cruel. The first night we ate in the restaurant and felt the food was very mediocre in quality and way way overpriced for what it was. I wouldn't choose to eat there again. The cooked breakfast was also not as good as I would have expected ( and a breakfast sausage should be pork only - who wants to be tasting leeks for the rest of the day?).

The room was very nice, spacious and clean and staff were very helpful. For a hotel, bar prices were not too bad but being in Leith there are plenty of cheaper bars nearby. I was also surprised, given the proximity to other bars etc how quiet the room was.

Overall the stay was pleasant enough but we won't be going back.

Having never stayed in a Malmaison before, I was surprised upon checking in to hear the check in clerk request that I put down a £50 'deposit' on my credit card to guarantee any purchases I make. I thought this was pretty cheeky, so I refused.

After about 15 minutes in the room, the clerks colleague called and said that seeing as I was not going to leave my credit card details, someone was going to come up and empty the mini bar, as this was company policy. Frankly, I found the fact that they would be prepared to embarrass one of their guests and cause such a scene astounding. I was not prepared to be shown up by this, so the only option was for me to trudge all the way back down and leave my card details!

Having gotten that out of the way, we were able to start relaxing, although belatedly. The hotel room was of a decently large size, and very comfortable. However my particular view was of a brick wall, having requested a 'good view' when making the reservation, but I couldn't be bothered complaining about this.

I would recommend cocktails in the bar- there are many to choose from and at fairly decent prices. Breakfast was also excellent the next day, and there was a good deal on- £25 for two cocktails and two breakfasts the next day.

Having said that, I doubt I would stay in any Malmaison again after the credit card fiasco- surely it should be my choice to leave credit card details, and I shouldn't be threatened with someone coming up to the room to empty the mini bar just because I chose not to.
