2 night Easter break at 'Mal' Edinburgh. Good check in, very efficient. Check in staff VV helpful and explained buses, local attractions etc. Free car park behind the Hotel.

The offer we had included evening meal which was a little disappointing. 1st night was fine, efficient staff etc. Problem occurred on the 2nd night. Same, limited menu with a 2 hour wait for main course :-( Guess there were more waiting staff than kitchen staff!!!

Room was very nice no complaints here. The only problem was the room wasn't made up. The cleaners arrived at 19.20 hrs, just when we were getting ready to go out for the evening. I asked if it was possible for them to come back in ten minutes. Apparantly it wasn't possible. Told them not to bother ( a little awkward when you go to the door in a towel!!)

Really nice bar to the left of the hotel called the Granary. Thoroughly recommend and only 1 minutes walk away.

To get into Edinburgh go on the bus. Check-in staff explained exactly how to get to the bus stop and only £1.00 each way to/from Princes St.

Would I return to this Hotel - Yes

Not sure I would want to pay the Rack rate for the Hotel though as I am not sure the restaurant service is up to it. Get the Hotel as a deal however and you won't go too far wrong.

  • Liked — good location, helpful check-in and informative staff
  • Disliked — unlucky with cleaning staff & restaurant - improvements could be made here

Malmaison Edinburgh was outstanding! From the quick and efficient check in to the fantastic service in the restaurant- we truly got the Mal experience.

Its still in my head nearly 4 months on!

I loved the room- we had a corner one which was spacious and clean. Room service was great. Only one thing- i couldnt get out the bed because it was so comfy- thankfully, we were able to get a late check-out after a quick call to reception.

I loved it- and I will be back without a doubt.

At first sight the room seemed very nice but the practicalities of it (or lack of) kicked in when it got dark. The lighting was very poor and you really had to get ready in the bathroom which isn't brilliant when there are two of you to get organised. It was also a little cold. I don't think the heating comes on until later. There was also a lot of noise from the garage at the side of the hotel quite early in the morning so maybe you should ask to be away from that.
I like the buzzy bar however, I did see some people struggling to get served and the restaurant was good for dinner and breakfast. Do have a meal at Fishers next door though as well which has a brilliant atmosphere and great food.
Leith was fantastic, even though we had bad weather, it still managed to feel continental somehow. We absolutely love the Royal Yacht museum. Only a few minutes away and absolutely fascinating.
All in all - an enjoyable trip with just some minor reservations.

Decided to treat my partner to 1 nights stay at the Weekend seeing we were apart at Valentines the previous day.

Booked online - Friday night reasonably priced at £119 for two on their B&B rates for a basic double room - watch for Sunday night winter deals were being offered at £99 for 2 for dinner, b&B -which seems a great bargain!

room although not massive was compact with a nice comfy Queen Sized bed - more than big enough for us (my partner is 6ft2 and built like a rugby prop!)

decor is modern in that 90s way although room could do with a new lick of paint - but overall a nice room with photography of old Edinburgh streets and closes adorning the walls - making it much more personal than your usual chain. Room comes with a much needed iron and board in the closet and your usual coffee and tea making facilities.

having stayed at the newer Belfast Malmaison on Business i was expecting the Edinburgh Mal to have DVD players as standard but the Stereo & CD was a good substitute- remember to bring a couple of favourite CDs! You can order fresh milk for that tea/coffee first thing free of charge - a nice touch.

Had a drink in the bar before going into the brasserie for dinner - good selection of food and we both enjoyed our meal.
Wine list is huge and lots of good things to choose from although start around the £20 mark and upwards.

The breakfast has a good selection from continental to the full Scottish Breakfast. I opted for the eggs benedict with Smoked Salmon - very nice. Everything is cooked to order so it doesnt have that dried out buffet taste some of the other well known chains opt for!

Had a lovely stay - its modern, slinky and sexy place (can a hotel be sexy?!?) perfect for a romantic break - its well placed on the SHore next to several great seafood restaurants and mix of funky and traditional bars - Kings Wark is great for a traditional cask beer.

  • Liked — relaxed funky atmosphere - good service but not overly formal
  • Disliked — nothing

Stayed at the Mal Edinburgh for 2 nights in February, and had a very, very nice stay. I booked the room on a promotional deal on the mal website, it's worth keeping an eye open as they often do special offers. Our room was a basic double, so not the biggest, but this wasn't a problem at all. Decor in the room and throughout the hotel was very nice - stylish and modern, that style of dark colours, old-fashioned patterns but done in a modern style. Bed was very comfy, the bathroom modern and clean, and I loved the shower.

Location wise, the hotel is in Leith, about 2 to 3 miles from Edinburgh city centre. It's one of those dockland areas which has been recently regenerated and is now a pleasant area of hotels, apartments and restaurants. A taxi to/from the city centre costs about £7 or £8. It could be possible to walk into town (the bad weather prevented us from trying it this time!) although the main road from Leith to the city has a poor reputation and it's advisable to avoid this at night.

The hotel staff were very friendly and helpful, we were greeted warmly and any questions I had were answered enthusiastically. There was even an occasion where we had to evacuate to the cold outdoors because of a fire alarm, but the hotel staff got us all into a nearby bar and provided us with drinks and snacks while we waited to return. Also, we ate in the hotel restaurant and the food and service was very high quality.

To conclude, we had a lovely, relaxing stay in this stylish, comfortable hotel. I'd definitely recommend it, especially if you can get a good deal like we did!
