“Went on aberdeen reputation , Edinburgh need to get a grip stop the slip !”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed November 23, 2011

We stayed in november for 2 nights and was not a great start as late rooms never sent over our booking so we had to wait to be manually put in the system (not hotels fault) they had our things sent up to our room which was a nice touch whilst we had a drink in the bar.
Room was very small and far too hot we had the window open for the duration of our stay.
We also used the fan in the cupboard and it was on all night.
Shower went hot cold hot cold the duration of the shower.
Breakfast was nice and tasty , down side we could touch the person either side of us sitting down it was that tight for space.
After we came back after being out for a meal we had a few drinks in the bar , could not believe my ears when the bar staff called last orders. Its a HOTEL the bar does not shut if there are patrons in the bar there were 4 of us plus another 5 or 6 people who were not happy !!!
Never bothered with breakfast sunday and all together not a good experience.
Will not be back hope mailmaison get their act together as this place is letting them down !

Very friendly and helpful staff. Cold, very dark, underlit corridors and stairs and not very warm bedroom. Excellent looking restaurant menu. Food poorly cooked. Walnut and blue cheese salad good but less than half a walnut and even less cheese on it. Steak very thin and overcooked, chips very oversalted. Cooked breakfast overcooked. Scrambled egg part raw part rubbery. Disappointing as it could have been sensational if the kitchen had been on top form.

I stayed at the Malmaison with family for two nights in June. The stay was fairly pricey (£160) keeping in mind the location (very far from city center!) and quality of rooms. We were met with smiles at the check-in and were given our keys quickly. The service at the hotel was top notch, which was the only saving grace for the hotel.

We went upstairs to our room and I went in for a shower. The pressure in the shower was extremely, extremely low. Thinking it might be a low power setting, I tried fiddling with the shower head to increase the pressure. The shower head moved and started spraying water at the ceiling!!!! Completely shocking for any hotel of repute. I immediately called the reception and we were moved to a different room without fuss (good service!). Even in this room, the shower had extremely low pressure.

The room itself was quite alright with decently comfortable beds. The problem was that there was no airconditioning. While I understand that the UK does not need airconditioning for most of the year, but considering this was the end of June and the UK was in the midst of a heatwave, it was absolutely torturous! It was extremely uncomfortable and even the windows would open only a few inches. It is unacceptable that a hotel that claims to be luxurious should put its customers through such discomfort even if its only for a few weeks in the summer.

The breakfast was excellent, no complaints whatsoever. The hotel is also pretty far from the city center although there is a bus service from 5 mins away. We had rented a car but we left the car at the hotel as it didn't make sense to drive into Edinburgh city center. The bus service is convenient but takes about 30-40 minutes in traffic, taking a rather circuitous route. All in all, it wasn't what I'd call an enjoyable stay. The hotel could be much better than what it is.

A nice room (Arthur's Suite) with a lovely bath area & bathroom. The room was very hot at night which made it hard to sleep. The staff were not overly friendly at reception but the service in the restaurant was ok. There was also a problem with our bill where they tried to charge us for dinner we had already paid for. We weren't the only people this happened to on the one night we were there.

Recently stayed for one night at The Malmaison Edinburgh. Check in was friendly and quick and we were given a lovely room on the second floor. The room was warm (cosy), stylishly decorated and spacious. The bed was quite hard, and we had to ask for more pillows, but it was comfortable. Lots of lovely toiletries in the bathroom. We ordered room service, which was delivered within 30 minutes. It was delicious!!! We ordered bread, pate, chicken satay, corned beef hash and fries - all very very tasty and my husband is still raving about the corned beef hash with fried duck egg (another visit just for the room service food alone is on the cards!). We had a great nights sleep. Breakfast, served in the Brasserie, was also delicious and included all the usual continental choices, aswell as a cooked menu which you can request to be made freshly. My husband had the traditional cooked breakfast of sausage, bacon, egg etc and I had the waffle with bacon and maple syrup (served on an addorable wooden board with mini copper pot of syrup) - both beauiful.
We will definately stay at the Mal again, having stayed at Mal's in Glasgow and Liverpool also, I think the original (Edinburgh) was the best!!

Stayed at this Mal in September.

The hotel needs to go through some upgrading as we have stayed at other Malmaisons and sadly this one was lacking the cool sophistication. The staff worked hard to make our stay enjoyable.

We recently stayed at this hotel for a weekend whilst attending a family wedding. The location is reasonable in the newly modernised docks area Leith, with it's fashionable bars and restaurants nearby including The Kitchin. It is also within walking distance of the Ocean Terminal shopping centre and the Royal Yacht Britannia.
The hotel itself is pleasant with friendly staff and feels warm and inviting. It also has a good sized private car park to the rear.
The room was comfortable with all the general facilities we needed including, iron and board, trouser press, hairdryer, coffee/tea making, large TV, CD player and payable mini bar. The toiletries were complimentary and also included foot and had creams and a face mask and eye cream!
The only food we tried was breakfast and this was also a good standard. Plenty of choice for the continental stlye with fresh fruit, cereals, croissants etc and an additional option for a hot cooked breakfast. Choose from traditional fry up or fish, eggs benedict, omelettes etc.

A pleasant stay and would consider it again if in the area.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
It's the mother of all Malmaison's. The former house of ill-repute now has a reputation that's second to none, and it's also just a short taxi ride away from Waverley Station. Malmaison Edinburgh bides at Leith (as they say up here), just a stone's throw from the Royal Yacht Britannia, but offering far more funky luxury. Yes, when you want exciting hotels in Edinburgh, this is the King, not the castle. Our Edinburgh hotel puts you close to all of Edinburgh's cobbled splendours, incredible shopping and famous galleries. Then it's back to Mal for Scots dining with a twist, a fine selection of single malts and mojitos in the bar and then back to the slinkiest and most spectacular rooms in the Scots capital. ... more   less
