“Not so glorious food...”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 9, 2011

We stayed at the Malmaison for a 3 night break for my husband's birthday. The location of the hotel is excellent. Lots of good bars and restaurants in the area, handy for the bus to the city centre and very close to the Scotch Malt Whisky Society (my husband's favourite venue).
Our room was quiet, spacious & very comfortable with lovely toiletries that we were encouraged to take with us when we left.
We didn't eat in the hotel, other than breakfast, and this proved to be the one gripe of our stay. The food and service was good on the first two mornings but on our last morning (a Sunday), it was awful. There weren't enought staff to deal with the number of guests and the service was completely disorganised. Cooked food was being delivered to the wrong tables and I could see that many people were frustrated with the problems and delays. Having had two delicious breakfasts, the one on the Sunday was a real disappointment - tasteless and lukewarm.
I know times are tough and many hotels will be looking at staff numbers accordingly but the number of guests having breakfast is pretty predictable and a hotel of this calibre should be able to do better.

The location of this hotel is brilliant right in the heart of Leith docks a real vibrant area with lots of great resteraunts .
The staff were ok but this hotel really has to do something about the road noise from the cobbled streets outside in fact it was so bad during the night I got up out of my bed to ensure the windows were closed as the road noise was so loud . If they fitted some double glazing to the windows I would go back in a second but when I mentioned it the reception staff they were not in the least bit interested which is a real shame as this hotel would be brilliant if they did something about the windows to reduce the road noise from the cobbled streets outside .

On short business trip to Edinburgh, I stayed 2 nights in the Malmaison due to it's location to meetings.
Standard Malmaison offering, quirky looking hotel at a reasonable price.
On the first night, I woke frozen in the room, turned on the room radiator but it didn't heat. I had slept through the mid morning chill in the room and earned myself a cold. I called reception and was assured the heat was on, only to find a contradictory explanation on check out, it was off due to good weather the previous weekend. I was supplied with a broken convector to take the snap out of the bedroom. When asked if the staff could help, I asked to be restored to the health I was in upon arrival. Pathetic.

We arrived tired from driving from Wales and were told room was not ready, but were given
complimentary soft drinks at the bar. When we were shown our room it faced the not very nice
side of the hotel- a real letdown since the room was very nice. We were upgraded to a fantastic
front facing room, but told it would only be for a day. We stayed 2 nights in that room and checked out of our own accord. The hotel is very hip and at times the staff tries too hard to be hip which ends up in them being aloof. If you go, make sure to explore the restaurants in the area- really good (Mimi's down the street for breakfast /Fischer"s across the the street for fine seafood. They just need to stop trying to be so hip and be more attentive to their guests. Nice products in the bathroom. Location is far from city center..

me and my gf stayed for just one night and this was a very nice place to stay and finished to a high standard. food was very nice. had a boiled egg in the morning, which was perfect. staff in brasserie were very nice, but there was a few dislikes about this hotel. 1. was check in was 3:00 which we didn't arrive till half 3 and got told room wasn't ready and got a free -non-alcoholic drink and was told half an hour which we had been dragging bags with us for about 2 hours around and were very tired after a long train journey also, but 40 mins later we go back and then finally get told it was ready and we weren't happy and receptionist couldn't give us the reason why it was not, we received a bad sorry who seemed like she couldn't care. apart from that it was very nice that is the reason for the 4* instead of 3*

Room Tip: we got a standard room which was very nice, but there are a lot of upgrades to rooms or suites.

We stayed the night at the Hotel after a visit to Martin Wishart's restaurant in Leith.

Firstly, the location is great...very close to loads of great restaurants and bars.

The staff were very friendly and helpful, but the hotel is starting to show its age and looks a bit tied around the edges.

The room (suite) was very nice, but again starting to show age....the wardrobe handles were broken, the hairdryer did not work and the shower in to the bath did not drain quickly.

The bar was busy and fun, drinks were made well and the service was excellent.

Breakfast was very good, good choice and the hot food well cooked.

With a make over this hotel would be excellent, but would still stay there again.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
It's the mother of all Malmaison's. The former house of ill-repute now has a reputation that's second to none, and it's also just a short taxi ride away from Waverley Station. Malmaison Edinburgh bides at Leith (as they say up here), just a stone's throw from the Royal Yacht Britannia, but offering far more funky luxury. Yes, when you want exciting hotels in Edinburgh, this is the King, not the castle. Our Edinburgh hotel puts you close to all of Edinburgh's cobbled splendours, incredible shopping and famous galleries. Then it's back to Mal for Scots dining with a twist, a fine selection of single malts and mojitos in the bar and then back to the slinkiest and most spectacular rooms in the Scots capital. ... more   less
