Stayed at Prestonfield for two nights in early May 2006. It's located in a "beauty spot" with pretty views of pastures with Highland cattle, great old trees and peacocks strolling around. We had a driver so it wasn't a problem being so far from the city center, but those seeking something within walking distance to the tourist sites would likely be inconvenienced by Prestonfield's location. We ate twice at Rhubarb and enjoyed both meals, although with the weakness of the U.S. dollar, it seemed very expensive. Breakfast, which was included in the room rate, was lovely and the service was excellent (a little less so at dinner, when the dining room gets quite busy with locals coming for a special evening out). The decor of this place is over-the-top Edwardian bordello and if you like that sort of thing, it's great. Otherwise it might seem a little claustrophobic, with stuff everywhere, dark rich colors and lots of braid and ornament. Our room was comfortable but needed new carpet, and for the money I have to say I was just a little disappointed.

We stayed at the Prestonfield the weekend of the Edinburgh 10K Road race - which my husband was running in.

The hotel was amazing. Very opulent and luxurious. Our room was gorgeous - a large luxury double - big enough for the both of us. The staff could not have been more helpful or friendly and they really made the weekend extra special - taking a real interest in us.

Our meal in Rhubarb was fantastic.

We will definately stay at the Prestonfield again without hesitation! It was worth every penny.

.. our stay was terrible. The worst I have encountered from a hotel charging this much. Lowlights include but are not limited to: being told the wrong way to walk into town by a member of staff, being decanted the wrong bottle of wine at dinner, being blatantly lied to by a member of staff who, when confronted with irrefutable evidence to the contrary, made up more lies, which resulted in us waiting by the side of the road in the freezing Edinburgh weather for 1hr. The room was disappointing. We were in the modern extension at the back of the house where the ceiling are wallpapered to try to get that authentic look - it doesn't work. The bathroom was tired and dark. The mini bar was never restocked. The service at breakfast poor. The only good points were the ceilings in the original part of the house and some of the very amicable local staff. The restaurant itself is in a nice setting, although this wanes when you realise its not an original part of the house, but the food tries too hard. Our meals were overly fussy to downright nasty such as a horribly powdery crusted beef. When we left the hotel we made our complaints to the staff and were told that these would be passed on to the management. We have not heard anything since. Profoundly disappointing.

I did not stay at the hotel, but also have a need to post a review of Rhubarb restaurant. We had a party of three there in November 2005. It was absolutely the best restaurant experience of my life! The Inn was beautiful- especially arriving at night, driving up the long driveway with torches lining the way. The ambiance was so wonderful - regal, classy and just gorgeous. The food was so delicious, I could barely believe it. Particularly, the butternut squash with hazelnut soup - fantastic! The staff was amazing - helpful and so nice. I would fly back over there just for dinner in a heartbeat!!

I havent stayed at the hotel, but I thought I must write a review of its wonderful restaurant 'Rhubarb'. Pulling into the long sweeping driveway, with trees covered in glittering lights, and with peacocks asleep in the trees was enough to take my breath away. The place is like something out of Narnia, and has to be seen to be believed.
Once inside we were treated like royalty from start to finish, with excellent service without the staff intruding into our evening. Food was exceptional and adventurous.
After the meal we retired into a separate room for coffee and scrummy chocolates.
On our way out we sneaked into a side room where my boyfriend got down on one knee and proposed !! How romantic ! ( I said yes)
All in all a memorable fantastic evening in a memorable fantastic restaurant.
Thankyou Rhubarb for providing us with a small piece of Paradise.
