I'm probably being overly critical as the hotel is obviously fantastic but for a single guy staying on business I just thought it was a little overrated. Everything was a bit gawdy, very red and in your face. Food was very good and staff and location excellent, just not my kind of place I suppose especially considering the price.

My husband proposed to me at Prestonfield in 2006 (we only ate in the restaurant there but were that impressed we vowed to one day go back to stay overnight).

I booked the hotel for my husband's 30th and was really looking forward to returning to our fairytale hotel. I was nervous that our bubble may get burst a little from last time we were there with it being the 'moment' more than the hotel but we were far from disappointed and very impressed!

We arrived to be told we had been upgraded to a suite. The suite was HUGE with two bathrooms, a 4 poster bed, a living room, two plasma TV's, two mini bars and to top it off a chilled bottle of champagne and chocolates with a fresh red rose!!!! The whole hotel is very boudoir in style with deep reds, sumptuous velvets and a mix of fabulous art, furniture and tapestries / ornaments.

We had planned to go into Edinburgh during the day but couldn't tear ourselves away from the hotel! We lounged in the room for a bit enjoying the champagne, then took a walk in the grounds and enjoyed afternoon tea and a game of drafts in one of the many hotel lounges.

That evening we dressed for dinner and had a fabulous meal in the Rhubarb restaurant once again, before being led to one of the lounges for coffee and nibbles.

The food was again fabulous, the menu isn't huge but has something on to suit most people and the food not only tastes great but is superbly presented!

The staff are amazing, warm, friendly, welcoming, professional and polite. Nothing is too much for them and they go out of their way to make you feel special. As we checked out the lovely receptionist gathered tourist information and directions for us when we said where we were heading and remembered straight away that it was my husband's birthday and wished him a happy birthday with a beaming smile.

The hotel lived up to everything we hoped it would be and I would highly recommend it and will no doubt return very soon!

This hotel is out of the ordinary.
It's like stepping back to a time of absolute luxury and opulence. You actually, nearly feel honoured, that you are able to enter, this fabulous, historical house.
Just to be part of its life, for a short time. You slept here too, along with all the long gone figures of history. how cool is that!

My friend and i decided we didnt really want dinner, but high tea. This was at 9.00pm! No problem, so thats what we had, High Tea, with a blottle of La Grande Dame.

The staff are well trained, well mannered, but smiley and friendly when appropriate. They know how to do their job, and do it well!

So relaxing and easy.

The beds are just Zzzzzzzzzzzz!

Try it for yoursleves, you must!!!! Its a treat! :0)

We have stayed at the Prestonfield on a few occasions. It has the WOW factor. The rooms are fantastically decadent. Some might consider the decor to be over the top but I disagree. This place targets couples and is ideal for anyone looking for somewhere romantic and sexy. Rhubarb is a great restaurant, we have had excellent meals there with the exception of St. Valentines night 2007 - waited almost 2 hours for our meal. There was obviously some major disaster in the kitchen but it was never fully explained. We have given it another chance since and it lived up to its previous high standard though I don't think we would risk booking on another predictably busy night.

Having been led into a cul de sac full of bungalows by the sat nav mrs gums was beginning to feel a little anxious about where I had brought her to on our anniversary. Her anxiety subsided, however, when after using that old fashioned item called a map, we finally found and drove up to the white hotel building set against Arthur's Seat. The highland cattle and strutting peacocks in the grounds were a taste of what was to come - pure Scottish indulgence. The lavish over the top decor points to what this hotel is all about - doing very little but in total luxury. It is the ultimate lovers hideaway but yet a few minutes from the centre of the nation's capital We were greeted by kilted doormen and escorted to our room with heavy drapes, wallpaper, antique furniture and an abundance of velvet and silks, where a bottle of champagne was on ice. Over the next couple of days we took tea in the little cosy public rooms, snuggled up to each other before roaring open fires, wandered onto the balcony for drinks, meandered in the grounds, enjoyed an excellent Scottish breakfast each day and generally lounged about in luxury. We ate at Rhubarb, the hotel restaurant, on one night where the food was very good and the surroundings stunning. It was hard to drag ourselves out and into the city which lies a 10 minute taxi ride away but knowing we would return, after dinner, to a bed which was the size of a small carribean island made it much easier.
True if you are in Edinburgh city centre for business or want the nightlife or the views of the castle from your hotel window the Scotsman or the Balmoral are probably more sensible (and indeed very good) options. But if you want to relax in a true antedote to the chains or the bland creams and browns that seem to have taken over even the most upmarket grand hotels this is the place. Romance thy name is Prestonfield.

  • Liked — No futons and blank walls
  • Disliked — lack of spa and perhaps a pool
