“Lovely romantic hotel not too far from Edinburgh centre”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 25, 2013

The hotel is great!! Loved everything about it and the people in it; it's very romantic and elegant with many antique elements in design almost out of a movie. They offer free wifi and if you choose a buffet breakfast in the morning with a great selection fruits, cereals, croissants etc (I really liked salmon with scrambled eggs). We had a wonderful time during the dinner, the food was delicious and the staff were exceptional. The hotel staff is very helpful and friendly, make sure you enjoy your stay and always do whatever they can to help you enjoy your vacation in the hotel as well as in the city. The hotel located in a beautiful place with a few peacocks walking around. I would recommend this hotel to everyone and I really would like to stay there again.

This was the starting point of a week-long tour of Scotland and our 2nd stay at this hotel, which we clearly prefer this to its sister hotel The Witchery at the Castle. The rooms here are much nicer and the environment is less claustrophobic.
We had not even stopped the car at the entrance, as someone came to open the trunk, glanced at the luggage tags and phoned our names in. Check-in was a breeze and the luggage in the room before us. A chilled bottle of Champagne was waiting together with fruits and cookies. The breakfast buffet was wonderful and the choice of hot breakfasts marvellous.
The only down-sides, mentioned previously, still exist: the wash basin has separate taps for cold and (very) hot water, and you do hear the people walking in the room above you. Otherwise, true luxury from which a Small Luxury Hotel in the suburbs of Aberdeen could learn a lot!

This hotel gets my vote as probably the number 2 venue in Scotland -- second only to Glencoe House in Glencoe. Prestonfield is located in Prestonfield House and set amongst beautifully landscaped grounds (complete with multiple peacocks), a massive golf course and an adjacent Function Centre. We booked online taking the "Best available dinner, bed and breakfast" option which was GBP 270 for two people for one night.
The dinner was memorable and the staff were exceptional. Breakfast was similarly amazing.
We were in Room 5 which was large and nicely furnished in period style, however it was probably a little "cluttered" with so many antiques. The large four-poster bed and dozens of (well at least 6) pillows were very comfortable. And the bathroom had more than adequate supplies of towels.
In summary, an extraordinary venue, moderately expensive -- but well worth it.

11 of us went for a lovely afternoon tea here as part of a hen weekend. It was a beautiful place and I think the scones were the best I've ever tasted. Friendly helpful staff and an incredible range of teas. We all took photos of the bathroom it was so opulent!

I only didn't leave 5 stars as there was a mistake with the bill (although it was sorted promptly) and the chef put clotted cream on my friends plate as part of a dairy free selection! Could have been interesting!

Aside from this, just gorgeous. Highly recommend.

This is a hotel where a lot of care has been put into the furnishings - if you like that kind of thing, it is sumptuous and quite grand. The food is excellent and the service is, for the most part, excellent, with friendly and helpful staff. They even have air conditioning in the rooms - a rarity in Scotland and, in this case, necessary since we had fabulous weather in early June 2013.

However, there are a few things that mean I won't stay here again:

1. While my room was sumptuously decorated, there were no drawers for clothing- function over form, I say.
2. Worse, although they said they had wifi, the connection was dreadful! Guests have to collect their authentication requirements daily from the service desk. Access was pitiful. When I complained about this, I was told that too many guests had to many apps open and that the walls were thick. Not their problem, then......... When I pointed out that this was '[--]' and that they just needed to put in more wireless access points, I was told that the staff would not put up with my profanity. I did let them know that '[--]' in my country was not profanity, merely an emphatic 'nonsense'.

If you need to stay connected, this is not the place for you.

We stayed at the Prestonfield for 1 night for our anniversary. We booked a luxury double room and our stay included dinner and breakfast.

Room- was clean, nicely decorated and styled. Bed was large and very comfortable, however the shaving mirror in the bathroom was broken, but since we were only there for one night it was not too much of an inconvenience..

Dinner-We dined in the Rhubarb restaurant. Again the surroundings were lovely however my wife was seated on a low couch for dinner which was too low for dining at the table and even with a cushion provided by staff she still felt as if she had been given the 'odd chair at the Christmas table 'which spoilt the overall enjoyment.
We chose from the a la carte menu and while the food was very nice I felt that the portion size could have been better ( especially the venison.) The service was perfectly paced and we didn't have to wait too long between courses. Asil our waiter was excellent.
Breakfast- This time we were able to chose our table at breakfast and chose a table by the window in the Rhubarb restaurant (2 chairs same height!) which was really nice with a lovely view of the gardens. Breakfast was excellent and couldn't really criticise anything.
The staff were all lovely and very attentive without being intrusive.
Overall enjoyed our stay and would recommend to anyone looking for something different .

Room Tip: luxury double room very nice

We were on foot exploring the area surrounding Prestonfield and decided to try to tour the house on the advice of the innkeeper we stayed with. The grounds were classic and exceptionally well cared for. What we did not know is they were hosting a wedding that day. When we stepped inside we were greeted by a fine gentleman named Stewart who informed us of the impending wedding, but still graciously insisted on giving us a full tour of the house. Despite being frequently consulted for direction on the wedding setup, Stewart gave us a detailed tour, explaining the history of this wonderful hotel. And what history it has. We left Prestonfield with several thoughts in mind; first, if this is the level of service they offer tourists off the street, how intricate and specialized the service must be for guests! Second, how lucky Prestonfield is to have a professional like Stewart representing their reputation, and lastly, how fast can we get back to Edinburgh to stay at Prestonfield? In a world full of choices we would have no qualms about choosing Prestonfield for our next stay in Edinburgh.
