As regards location, it doesn't get much better than this in the heart of the old town. I've normally stayed at the Balmoral or the George in what's called the 'new' town - which means the two hundred year old bit of the city as opposed to the five hundred year old bit. The building is in the old Edinburgh style and won't fail to impress - though maybe scrubbed up a bit too much. Some disappointments though. I booked the hotel because it had a swimming pool and as happens so often in the UK, it wasn't available. I was advised to go to a nearby sports centre - no thanks. The rooms were spacious but lacked a wow factor, decor a bit tired - think the Meridien ten years ago. There is internet access but a very limited range of TV channels - mainly sport and no news. Breakfast was crazily overpriced - you'd have to eat all the egg and bacon on offer to justify the price. Service was friendly enough and the staff were helpful. The bar is convenient but the restaurant looks like a low class American diner - horrible low seating. So, I'd go again but things could be that much better.
