When I called to bok direct with the hotel, the reservation staff asked if our stay was for any special occasion - and I expalined that our overnight in Edinburgh was to be part of a birthday trip to the area for my partner.

On arrival our room had been upgraded and we discovered a good bottle of wine, a dinky box of chocs and a birthday card with a hand written note from the manger. (thank you Fi, nice touch) A lovely surprise and it got our trip off to a great start.

We didnt use the diing facilities as Edinburgh has so much to offer, but we had good service from reception, the concierge was very helpful and the location fabulous.

The room was larger than average, bed very comforatble, bathroom top notch and overall we couldnt have asked for more.

The 'mats' on the bed are a bit wierd, but hey, who can tell what goes on in the mind of an interior designer!

The great location, positive upbeat service and thoguhtful touches will make the Radisson SAS our first port of call next time we visit.
Just book it!

We were delighted with the location, about mid-way on the Royal Mile. The room was large, clean, and very quiet. Those were the things we were interested in, so we were quite pleased.
The prices at the restaurant kept us from trying them, and we did not rely on the staff for advice or help on what to do or see since the feel was that it was more of a business hotel than one for tourists.

As this was our last night in Scotland, I thought this would be the best stay of our 7 nights in Scotland. I was wrong.

Having stayed only one night, I'm glad. Despite the central location, I will not go back. The room was decorated in a sterile industrial style, with street noise not making it any better. The HVAC unit would not hold the room to a comfortable temperature.

Upon checking out, I was surprised that we were charged 29 GBP for the buffet breakfast. Not only was it not worth the price, it was to have been included in the room. The front desk clerk stated, "what did we expect for the price of 120 GBP for the room?". Since this, I have been told via e-mail from the front desk manager that the "complimentary breakfast" mentioned on their website is for business travelers and not served in the breakfast room but in the lounge. Why do they have a button in the lift that says "breakfast room" that leads you to believe you are going to the B&B breakfast?

I'll stay at Melville Castle, where we had a delightfull two nights at the start of our trip.

I couldn’t have asked for a better placed hotel. The Raddisson is situated right in the middle of Old Edinburgh making all tourist attractions a stones throw away. Also within walking distance are a number of pubs, nightclubs and restaurants (I particularly recommend the Italian on the corner across the road. Beautiful!) The reception staff were very helpful and courteous and looked after our bags while we went for a wander before check in.

The double room we received was lovely and spacious with TV, safe, mini bar and hairdryer. The only problem I would have is that it wasn’t very well lit!! There were two lamps on the walls of either side of the bed and a florescent light behind a board at the top of the curtains. The window was also quite small.

The only bad part of this otherwise very satisfactory stay was the night we went to the restaurant in the hotel, 'Itchycoo'. We were greeted by a very cocky headwaiter that advised us to take a seat. He then proceeded to move us as apparently our table 'wasn’t big enough for the 4 of us' and told us he'd be back to take out order. 15 minutes later I had to go to the bar to ask for someone to serve us only to be sent a waiter who couldn’t speak English, didn’t know what the dishes were on the menu, didn’t offer to find out for us and who couldn’t even make cocktails that were listed on the cocktail menu!! These are just some of the problems I can be bothered to write about. Needless to say there were quite a few more. My advice, go to one of the many beautiful restaurants located right outside your door and save yourself some money and the hassle!

We booked this hotel for two nights on the strength of its location and previous TripAdvisor reviews. First the good points: the location is simply fantastic. You have Edinburgh castle a short distance up the road in one direction, and Holyrood Palace a similar distance away in the other direction. In between you have the Royal Mile and you are a short distance from Princes Street. The front desk staff were polite and courteous and our room was clean and spacious. The rooms are quite dark as well. The windows are small and the lack of light isn't helped by the dark curtains and furnishings as well as the frankly pathetic lighting (a single flourescent tube shining onto a dark curtain plus a couple of dark lamps??). Then again, this is the "minimalist" style so it's my personal taste disagreeing with it.

Now the not so good points. We arrived late in the day and ordered dinner from room service. It was very expensive (£40 for a hamburger and a steak) but not very tasty. They also only supplied one napkin! Breakfast (surprisingly not included in the £155 per night room rate) was very expensive at £14 but it is all you can eat, yet again it's not very nice food. On the second morning there was a queue out the door for a table so we went to a local cafe across the road for breakfast. It was one third the price and about 4 times as good!! I would recommend getting breakfast elsewhere (and dinner as well for that matter!). Other niggling problems were things like light bulbs not working in the room (more of a problem here due to the dark rooms), curtain rails broken, scarce storage space, missing hotel information sheets from the folder (does anyone check these??!), noisy air conditioning and plumbing and so on. Yes, these are minor gripes but I certainly don't expect them in a hotel chain of this calibre.

The biggest issue I have is with the guest services. We asked them twice for directions to various events and on both occasions they were wrong. As a result we were late to the first event and missed a bus for the second event, forcing a wait of over an hour in an already busy day. I found this totally unacceptable but the hotel staff I mentioned it to did apologise for it.

Overall I would only recommend this hotel if you get a really good rate. The location is excellent but regrettably there's not much else going for it.

I stayed at the hotel 29th sept 2006 for 2 nights. I stayed in a family room with a king size bed and 2 singles. The room was immaculate. Staff was very freindly and couldn't do enough for us except for John in the hotel bar, he was very rude, not only to us but to other guests as well. Keith Porter is fantastic I reccommend a massage with him, he is worth every penny. (tell him Rebecca, Mandy, Debbie sent you) This is the best hotel I've stayed in, I am going back in the next few weeks.
THANK YOU RADDISON SAS!

Just returned from 2 night stay at the SAS. Great location and extremely clean (big point for me). All staff very friendly and helpful during our stay.

The location of the hotel is ideal for all sights in the Old Town, and the views from the front of the hotel are stunning. Rooms very spacious, but not too sure about the decor (very dark wood, and curtains, which made the room very dark looking. Very small window but as the hotel has been built to blend in with the other buildings on the Royal Mile this is understandable. Very good soundproofing in the room prevented any noise entering the room from Royal Mile.

Breakfast included in my rate (£75 per night) which was of very good quality. Staff in restaurant very helpful and attentive, and a lot of them. Large staff:resident ratio.

All in all, a great time had at the SAS. Highly recommended.
