We stayed here for three nights during the last week of June 2005. We booked direct with the hotel and paid the business rate of 160GBP per night because the cheaper rate was not available, but business rate does include breakfast, robes and slippers, a newspaper, movies and use of the pool and gym.

Upon arrival we were given a modern room on the second floor right outside the lifts and overlooking the Royal Mile. It was a very hot day and when I tried to turn the airconditioning on it wouldn't work. I called reception and was told that because the hotel had just finished a renovation the airconditioning hadn't been commissioned yet but they could bring us a fan. I went to open the window and discovered three pubs right outside on the street below (one of which had a sign promoting live music that evening). This wouldn't have been a problem as the hotel has secondary glazing, however, as it was so hot we would have had to sleep with the window open. I called reception again and explained my concern about the potential noise and they said they could relocate us to a higher room away from the main street.

They upgraded us at no extra charge to a suite on the fifth floor at the side of the hotel. The suite had a large bedroom with a very firm kingsized bed, TV and wardrobe and an equally large living room with two chairs, a table and another TV. The bathroom was exactly the same as the one in the room we had just moved from with a fantastic power shower and toiletries in shot glasses, cotton wool pads, cotton buds, etc. The only noise we were bothered by was the early morning traffic on the cobbled street below and the seaguls but with the aircon working and the double and secondary glazing I'm sure this would be greatly minimised. One thing I did notice which was a bonus was that there were absolutely no plumbing noises in our room, which I have come to expect as standard in most hotels. We didn't hear any noise from the neighbours either. The refurbishment is very modern with creams and coffee colours being used for the walls and carpets and crisp white sheets on the bed, I've posted photographs on the site to illustrate this.

Breakfast was nice standard hotel stuff; cereals, juices, fruits, yogurts, bacon, beans, etc. We only used the swimming pool in the leisure centre and it is very small!

Reception staff were friendly and the location of the hotel couldn't be beaten, right on the Royal Mile with tourist attractions, bars and gift shops close by.

Stayed here in July 2005 and thought it was a wonderful hotel. Room was quite large, the entire hotel was very modern, and the staff was very polite and helpful. I had a wonderful view of the city and the water from my room. Bed was extremely comfortable.

The AC was not working when I was there, but when I called the front desk to ask about it, they offered to bring a fan to my room, which I thought was quite accomodating.

All in all, I'd highly recommend this hotel. It's a great location - right on the Royal Mile, nearly plenty of stores, pubs and attractions - and the accomodations can't be beat. There's a taxi stand right outside the door for convenience, and there are many tours, such as the Mercat ghost tours and the Literary Pub Crawl, which start in this area.

Stayed her in June, 2005, for two nights and thoroughly enjoyed it.
The location just could not be bettered as it sits at the busy end of the Royal Mile. You step out of the hotel into one of the most interesting and lively roads you are ever likely to visit.
The room we had was great. The hotel is at the heart of Edinburgh in the midst of lively, city noise. Our room was equipped with interior double glazing and when it was closed you could not hear a sound from the street.
The room was spacious and spotlessly clean.
The staff at the Radisson could not have been more helpful or friendly.
The breakfast was excellent and dining room staff were welcoming and efficient.
We are going to Berlin in September and staying at the Radisson there. If it is half as good as Edinburgh, it will be good enough for me.

I recently stayed at the Radisson and felt they offered adequate (yet unspectacular) accommodations. The hotel location was the best aspect of my stay. If you are going to Edinburgh, I recommend staying somewhere on the Royal Mile. This stretch of the city contained most of the attractions worth seeing.

Overall, the Radisson is probably a 3-star hotel. The staff is average at best. The rooms are fairly large (my room had recently been renovated and the décor reminded me of a cheaper “W” style). The ongoing renovations seemed to upset overall services available at the hotel (they probably will be fully completed by the end of June). If you are able to obtain an excellent rate for this hotel (under $200 a night), then I would recommend a stay here. If not, go for one of the more upscale alternatives in the Old Town.

Edinburgh is a charming city. My overall visit was extremely enjoyable.

Disappointed by refurbishment

Stayed in one of the newly refurbished rooms but very disappointed.

The room (409) was an attic room and seemed smaller than many of the others.

Although the windows were double glazed there were gaps in the frames which caused a cold draught. ( And in Edinburgh cold is cold....) Not helped by the fact that the heating/air conditioning system was not working properly throughout the refurbished area of the hotel. The room was quite chilly at times throughout our stay. We eventually managed to get a heater from them and I noticed that other guets had also resorted to this.

I don't know if it was the fact that the windows had not been sealed properly but the room was also extremely noisy from the traffic outside on Royal Mile and in this part of town this is a 24 hours per day problem.

There was no mirror above the dressing table or within reach of any power point which made it impossible for my wife blow dry her hair. The mirror in the bathroom was unuseable because the extractor fan did not work and so it was misted and impossible to use. They eventually brought us a mirror but only after being asked several times.

The bulb in one of the side lights in the room flickered throughout our stay and was not fixed despite our requests.

The TV movie system had not yet been activated at the time of our visit.

Worst of all the hotel twice deactivated our room keys during our stay and told us this was because they had not taken a proper credit card swipe at the time of our check in. They were kind enough to leave a message for us on the room phone telling us that they had done this - but only after they had shut us out of the room!

The £14.50 additional charge for breakfast, which is a mediocre buffet, is just ridiculous.

The front of house manager tried to be be helpful and sort out our problems and this was appreciated but several members of staff openly blamed the poor quality of the refurbishment for the problems we were having.

Hopefully these will all be teething problems that will be sorted out but we are disappointed enough to exclude Radisson from the list of companies we are considering for a cruise in a few months time.
