We stayed here for three nights during the last week of June 2005. We booked direct with the hotel and paid the business rate of 160GBP per night because the cheaper rate was not available, but business rate does include breakfast, robes and slippers, a newspaper, movies and use of the pool and gym.
Upon arrival we were given a modern room on the second floor right outside the lifts and overlooking the Royal Mile. It was a very hot day and when I tried to turn the airconditioning on it wouldn't work. I called reception and was told that because the hotel had just finished a renovation the airconditioning hadn't been commissioned yet but they could bring us a fan. I went to open the window and discovered three pubs right outside on the street below (one of which had a sign promoting live music that evening). This wouldn't have been a problem as the hotel has secondary glazing, however, as it was so hot we would have had to sleep with the window open. I called reception again and explained my concern about the potential noise and they said they could relocate us to a higher room away from the main street.
They upgraded us at no extra charge to a suite on the fifth floor at the side of the hotel. The suite had a large bedroom with a very firm kingsized bed, TV and wardrobe and an equally large living room with two chairs, a table and another TV. The bathroom was exactly the same as the one in the room we had just moved from with a fantastic power shower and toiletries in shot glasses, cotton wool pads, cotton buds, etc. The only noise we were bothered by was the early morning traffic on the cobbled street below and the seaguls but with the aircon working and the double and secondary glazing I'm sure this would be greatly minimised. One thing I did notice which was a bonus was that there were absolutely no plumbing noises in our room, which I have come to expect as standard in most hotels. We didn't hear any noise from the neighbours either. The refurbishment is very modern with creams and coffee colours being used for the walls and carpets and crisp white sheets on the bed, I've posted photographs on the site to illustrate this.
Breakfast was nice standard hotel stuff; cereals, juices, fruits, yogurts, bacon, beans, etc. We only used the swimming pool in the leisure centre and it is very small!
Reception staff were friendly and the location of the hotel couldn't be beaten, right on the Royal Mile with tourist attractions, bars and gift shops close by.
