“Great location, good value, motel-like rooms”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed May 4, 2013

A standard hotel with a bit of a motel feel to it. Its old town location makes it perfect for tourists and while it's only about 600' from the train station, that distance is almost vertical, up about 70 steps (I counted them!) so if you have luggage, you'll need either a taxi or stamina. The staff is friendly and efficient (high marks to the concierge, Phil) and the lobby is always busy. The location makes it easy to walk to other parts of the city and the neighborhood, while touristy, has nice pubs, a range of restaurants, little grocers and souvenir shops, and places for breakfast if you're not taking it at the hotel, which was our case. The rooms are fine, albeit small, but they have the look of a place that is maintaining (the room was very clean) but not investing. There were scuffs on the wall, a burn mark on the carpet, a hook missing in the bathroom -- it adds up and made the room seem a little shabby. But the safe worked, the bed was good, the WiFi was free and robust, and our room on the back was very quiet. I echo what another wrote that the bed pillows are thin; wish I had thought to request replacements! We had scored a good price so taken all together, it was a good value and we didn't regret the choice. And Edinburgh is fabulous!

Room Tip: The hotel is on a very busy street with pubs across the street so it's highly advised to request...

Great standard chain hotel at the very heart of Edinburgh. Rooms are recently furbished, triple glazed, spacious and clean with huge beds and super soft pillows, great wifi and staff who care deeply about making sure you have a great experience. Breakfast a bit of a let down, we queued to get in each morning and it was a tight squeeze with few healthy eating options

Stayed in the turret room as an upgrade, 60m square (almost bigger than our house!!!!) and a view onto the Royal Mile. Staff were great, breakfast huge and delicious. Fantastic location. One small bad were the feather pillows. More fabric than feather, had to pile 3 on top and still wasn't enough. For someone with a bad neck, not ideal. Asked for polyester pillows for night 2 which worked OK. Not enough to spoil the experience.

Fab short break at this prime located hotel. Great service from well informed staff, well appointed rooms and lovely food and cocktails. Prime location on the Royal Mile, within walking distance of all major attractions. Very quiet despite being on the junction of a busy road. We'll be back!!

Stayed here for one night in January, on a last-minute deal.
The location is the star here especially for sightseeing, right on the Royal Mile. So many attractions are within walking distance including some fab live music literally across the road at the Mitre, Whiski and Whistlebinkies.
The rooms are large considering the age of the building and its prime position, with muted decor rather than the all-too-common tartan nonsense used in other touristy hotels in the capital.
Massive selection of food for breakfast in a stylish basement restaurant, and the pool facilities are great (if a little small).

Hubby booked two nights on a voucher deal purportedly giving us 50% off rack rate of £198 per night incl. breakfast. So I was expecting a really nice hotel. The first room smelled stale and we opened the internal glazing and the window, only to discover it wouldn't close again. Big problem as this room overlooked the late night bars already mentioned in previous reviews. We also discovered that the extraction fan in bathroom did not work. Reception staff were extremely helpful in taking us to a second room (an upgrade to business grade) overlooking an inner roof section. Again bathroom extractor didn't work and when we tried to open the high panel windows, we discovered they didn't open at all. Again the musty odour in the room was unpleasant. Once more, on asking for a change of room, reception staff could not have been more helpful. Finally we got a quiet room, with an option of fresh air from the window and as this too was a business grade, were able to enjoy an espresso machine, and towelling robes. Some compensation I guess for the inconvenience. The bar was very noisy and lacked atmosphere. Breakfast in the basement dining room was busy. Get down before 10.00 am to avoid long queue. Buffet was average; pastries were good though. The location couldn't be faulted for walking to the main tourist spots. But all in all I'd have been seriously disappointed, had we paid the full rate.

Room Tip: Unless you are taking advantage of the city's late night attractions, ask to be sited at the bac...

The location of this hotel really can't be beat. It's situated right at the crossroads of North Bridge and the Royal Mile, making it super easy to explore Old Town or cross over to New Town. It's surrounded by cafes and restaurants in addition to great little boutiques (Cockburn and Victoria Street).

The hotel is spacious and clean. The rooms are very comfortable. The pillows on the bed are a little too soft for my liking, but my friends thought they were great.

The staff is professional and eager to help. We had a bit of a wait on our rooms when checking in, even though it was past 3pm. But we were offered complimentary drinks while we waited, and in about a half hour or so, we got our rooms.

All in all, it was a great stay, and I'd definitely recommend this hotel to anyone going to Edinburgh.
