“Does exactly what it says on the tin”

My wife and mother-in-law and I stayed here for one night as part of our driving holiday around Scotland. We chose this hotel because of (a) its location and (b) the price. It's pretty much what you would expect from a Holiday Inn. The rooms are clean and well decorated but bland. The bathrooms are also clean but basic. Breakfast is a continental self-service, with plenty of choice of cereals, fruit, yoghurt and juice. Staff are friendly and reasonably efficient.

The hotel's location is very good, just a few minutes walk away from the Ocean Terminal and an excellent bus service into the city centre. Parking is good, and free!

All in all, it offers good value for money and clean spacious rooms.

I cannot say enough nice things about this hotel. Clean, comfortable and always felt safe and secure. What more could you ask of a hotel?

The breakfast is just as an American would expect at any Express Holiday Inn in the US. Extensive choice of cereals, juices, fresh fruit, coffee, tea, hot chocolate, breads, muffins, croissants. Always well stocked and constantly minded by the staff, and a large room with plenty of tables and chairs. Made morning easy and cheap not having to go out for breakfast.

These are NOT a complaints, just an observations for US readers. The rooms are about 2/3 the size of a typical American hotel in this class. Same goes for the bathroom. No enclosed closet nor any drawers for storage but ample shelves and an area for hanging clothes. Room had a hair dryer which makes it convenient for Americans due to voltage differences for appliances.

The preset temperature handle on the shower faucet should be standard equipment in American hotels.

As my wife and I are not big on nightlife and going out on the town the nice quiet bar in the hotel made it a good place to relax with a drink before turning in for the night. The large screen TV in the bar area was quite popular when the big football matches like Rangers vs Zenit were being played.

I will also echo the other posters who have praised the frequent and efficient bus service to the city centre and the proximity to the Ocean Terminal Mall.

It's not right in the middle of the city centre, but being 10 minutes away by bus, who cares?

My husband and I stayed at this hotel for two weekend nights in April and couldn't have been happier. As many reviews have already stated, the hotel is outside the city center, but has a great bus service available. Bus number 22 stops right outside the hotel about every two minutes. An all day pass is only 2.50 and the buses run for 24 hours.

All in all we were very impressed with the hotel. The rooms were very clean and comfortable, plus extremely quiet! We never heard a sound all night long. The reception staff were always very helpful with directions and restaurant suggestions.

The breakfast was just cereals, bread, croissants, juices, and coffee but still a good way to start the day.

We enjoyed the location of this hotel because if we hadn't stayed here we probably would not have seen Leith. We ate dinner at one of the nearby restaurants and enjoyed strolling around afterwards. The pubs looked great and came highly recommended.

The huge mall nearby is also a good sight. We saw a movie there one night and were impressed at the size and comfort of the theater.

We would definitely highly recommend this hotel! It's a great price and location!

  • Liked — The best part of the hotel was its low price!

We have to say we really enjoyed our entire stay here from the moment we arrived. The staff were very welcoming they knew straight away that we were there on a short sightseeing break and gave us very useful tips on where to go and the best way to do so. The room was very comfortable and clean with daily linen and towel changes. The buffet breakfast had a varied selection which we particularly liked (cereals, fruit, croissants, toast, selection of juices, teas and coffees).
The hotel is in an idyllic location as it is within a minutes walk to the Ocean Terminal shopping centre with one of the must see attractions that is the Royal Yacht Britannia!!!
We highly recommend purchasing the royal ticket, it costs only £34 approx and gets you into Edinburgh Castle, Holyrood Palace, Royal Yacht Britannia and also gets you two days unlimited access to the tour buses.
All in all one of the most memorable short city breaks we got to do a lot in the short space of time. well worth the visit and would go back in a nano second!!!!!

My Husband and I have just got back from a two night stay at the Holiday Inn, Waterfront, Edinburgh.

The hotel served our purposes well. We were there to site-see and therefore the hotel was really just somewhere to lay our heads at the end of the day.

The hotel is located in a suburb on the outskirts of the centre opposite the Ocean Terminal shopping centre where the Royal Yacht Britannia is moored.

There are plenty of buses into the centre and echoing what others have previously said, the number 22 is perfect, running every few minutes from outside the hotel and only £1 pp per trip.

Our room was clean and modern. Our only gripe was that the bed has to have been the most uncomfortable bed either of us has ever had the misfortune to sleep in! The mattress was so lumpy I actually had bruises on my hips and was unable to sleep on my sides the second night. Had we been staying longer I would have requested a move.

The breakfast is continental and absolutely fine.

We very much enjoyed our first visit to Edinburgh. Our highlights were most definitely the Royal Yacht, the castle and the museums within the castle. My husband is Armed Forces and we were impressed to get a discount for entrance to the Yacht, something the castle should take note of!

We booked our break through Easyjet and paid only £100 pp for flights from Stansted and accommodation – excellent!

  • Liked — Value for money
  • Disliked — The awful bed!

The location of this hotel is very very good indeed. It's right next to the Ocean Terminal and all the associated shops, Royal Yacht Britannia etc.

Parking is absolutely no problem. There are also some very good restaurants and bars within walking distance. I was very impressed with the location, everything is smart and modern.

As has been pointed out in numerous previous reviews, there is an EXCELLENT bus service which takes you into the City Centre ( Edinburgh). The bus is a number 22 and it stops right outside the hotel. I'd say this is one of the best points about this hotel. The frequency of these ( 24 hour) buses is amazing, we never had to wait for longer than about 90 seconds. It's almost like a conveyor belt! If you are a visitor from overseas, this bus would be an excellent way of seeing "Leith Walk" and doing a bit of people watching from the bus.

Incidentally there is also another bus - I'm sure it is a number 35- which passes this hotel and goes all the way to Edinburgh Airport.

The hotel itself is pretty standard but the staff all speak excellent English ( which you can't always take for granted) . The breakfast was good, but it's "continental". i'e., croissants , bread rolls etc.

I did notice that there were quite a lot of young couples from overseas staying here, presumably for the weekend. The hotel reception staff were very helpful towards them, explaining excursions, tours etc .

For any Scottish hotel, heating is a major overhead and some steps had been taken to economise.... Namely, the cable to the electric panel radiator in our room had been sliced off...(!?) This wasn't a particular problem because there was a good air conditioning system which you could set at between 18 and 23 degrees.... however if you came back to the hotel drenched by freezing rain ( not an uncommon experience in Scotland) you might be a bit miffed that there wasn't a functioning radiator in the room.

Nope, other than the heating issues ( which wasn't a problem for us really) I can't fault the place. In fact we had intended going into Edinburgh for a meal but decided to stay in Leith instead. I was astonished by how Leith has been transformed, and I'd certainly stay here in preference to Central Edinburgh.

Looking back on this review, it does look a bit "glowing" but I can assure you that I am normally a "grumpy old man" and this is my sincere opinion!! Check out some of my other reviews and feel free to contact me if you need further information.

We have just returned from a weekend break at this hotel in Edinburgh to see England V Scotland at Murrayfield. Although approx 20 minutes outside the city, the transport system is superb and extremely accessible. The No. 22 stops outside the hotel and takes you straight into Princes Street at a cost of £2.50 per day and is 24/7.
The hotel is a typical Holiday Inn, clean, staff friendly and room was spacious. The hotel is close to the Ocean Terminal shopping and cinema precinct and the HMS Brittania which is well worth a visit, so to is The Granary restaurant and bar which is only a walk away, or a hop on the No. 22.
