Paid £29 for a one night stay so suppose I can't grumble too much for that price. The location is very good, just off the Royal Mile and only a ten minute walk to pretty much anywhere... the Castle, Waverley Bridge/Station, Holyrood etc. Travelodge is Travelodge, they're all the same regardless of what city you stay in. Characterless but clean, no-frills but functional. However, there were a few issues I have about this particular stay. Firstly, their checkin policy is an absolute joke. The checkin time states 3pm and they will not let you checkin a minute earlier. I arrived at 2.50pm and asked if I could checkin and they said I'd have to pay an early checkin fee. Ridiculous! I've never had a problem checking in a few minutes early at any other hotel that I have stayed in. Not that I was overly bothered about waiting around for 10 minutes, but this system creates another problem. Everyone is hanging around in the bar area waiting to checkin and then at bang on 3pm when they call everyone forward, there is a massive queue. Surely it would be better to allow people to checkin a bit earlier than 3 and avoid this mad rush? Secondly, the products they offer in their rooms is a disgrace. 1 small bar of cheap soap and that's it. It clearly states on their website that shampoo/shower gel isn't available in the bedrooms but can be obtained from reception free of charge if required. When I asked at reception they denied this and told me to pay £2 for a sachet of shower gel out of a machine, shampoo is unavailable. I know it's a budget hotel but I expected a better service than this. Finally, the clientele staying at this hotel didn't make the stay any better. Full of idiots running around knocking on doors at 3am and generally causing a nuisance. I know this isn't directly the hotels fault but when I informed them of this they weren't interested. Gave me the impression it happens all the time. Edinburgh is a wonderful city and walking around you see so many beautiful hotels in grand buildings. It was almost embarrasing going back to the Travelodge, in its prefabricated building with graffiti on the outside! Travelodge is cheap but do yourself a favour, spend a bit more money and stay in one of the nicer hotels of Edinburgh. There are so many of them and the Travelodge will leave you disappointed and wanting more from your stay.
