I booked this hotel because this was the cheapest option among all hotels (e.g. Ibis, SAS, etc.) located in Edinburgh city centre. The location was really convenient, considering that a 1-min walk would take you to the Royal Mile and 10-min walk would take you to Waverley rail station. A big advantage of the hotel.

The facilities in room were basic, but clean and neat. The double room I stayed was equipped with a LCD TV with good connections to all channels, so it was good. They provided a soap but not shower gel, shampoo, etc. Since they mentioned it on their website I don't think this was a problem (I used my own anyway). The strange thing was that the bathroom's door was pulled outside (instead of pushing towards the bathroom). What it meant was that everything I went to the bathroom I had to walk to the main door, open the bathroom door and then get in. It's a stupid design and I didn't have a clue who could accept this.

Food in the hotel was terrible. I had dinner and breakfast in their cafe during my stay. Choices of main courses in dinner were limited, and they tasted much worse than those ready-to-cook food from supermarkets. Breakfast also had very limited choices, e.g. bacon, sausages, scramble eggs, etc. Not worth GBP7.5. Better to avoid. You have plenty of options for breakfast paying this price.

My wife and I have just returned from a two night stay here and as in previous occassions when I have had short stays here the experience was very good. True, this is a low budget hotel and the facilities are basic but that's what you pay for so that's not a valid reason to complain. Where on the other hand praise is due is for the helpful attitude of the staff that were on duty from 23rd to 25th June. When they discovered my wife had a broken foot they immediately offered to change us to a more accessable room and order taxi's for us as well as insisting on helping us carry drinks from the bar even though I was perfectly fit. To top it off a minor problem with a tap in the bathroon was repaired within minutes of it being reported. Well done the staff of Travelodge Edinburgh Central.

To start with the positives, this hotel is very well located for exploring the sights of Edingburgh, a street or two away from the Royal Mile and its surrounds and within walking distance of the rail station.

I'm not sure - having read the other reviews - whether my room was the armpit of the hotel, but let me state that I'm used to budget. Budget, this was not. I found my room to be dirty, smudgy walls, bedding smelling sour, which didn't make for a very comfortable sleep.

Staff at reception were dismissive and almost at the point of laughing at another guest for not having a proper reservation (and seemingly no place to go for the night, it being after 11pm at the time). Just added to the grubby feeling of the place.

Amenities standard for budget hotel with sufficient vending machines in lobby (yay!); as far as I could make out, no shampoo and no hairdryer and the shower of such a size that if you turn on the hot water taps, the curtain will rise and cling-wrap its wet self to you and the shower will overflow onto anything that's on the floor (again, this could be because I was relegated to the worst room in the hotel).

Not terribly impressed - and I feel this hotel crossed the line between cheap and nasty.

This is a fairly standard Travelodge, in a really great location. You are seconds away from the Royal Mile with easy access to all the tourist attractions you could desire. I don't think you could get a better location for a cheaper price.

The hotel itself compares with other UK Travelodges; my room was basic but comfortable, and could have done with a small bit of maintenance (a few scuffs on the wall, that sort of thing - nothing major) but was clean. Oddly, there were no net/sheer curtains on the window for privacy - I'm not sure if this is normal or just a "feature" of my room. I found the lift "quirky" to put it mildly but did always eventually get where I was going! My room key didn't work when I checked in, and stopped working after my first night's stay, so I had to make a few treks, bags in tow, to reception. Finally, to echo other reviewers, the shower curtains seem designed to create a paddling pool on the bathroom floor.

The WiFi service was good. The staff are very friendly and helpful.

I do recommend asking for a quiet room at the back. Even so, you may still hear some noise at night - you are in the middle of the city!

I can't comment on the food - £7.50 seemed a little high for breakfast, especially when you consider the large number of cafes in the very immediate vicinity (at least 4) who will do a full cooked breakfast for around a fiver.

I had read the mixed reviews of this Hotel and as a result I asked if I could book rooms at the back of the Hotel to reduce the noise. The receptionist was happy to arrange this. The staff were polite and friendly and nothing was too much trouble. We didn't have the breakfast which was £7.50 for all you can eat so I can't comment on the food. The location is excellent, just around the corner from the Royal Mile and the castle at the top. Breakfast is available at different places in the area at a lower cost. The rooms were clean and tidy and the beds really comfortable. It is no frills so there are no toiletries, phone or hairdryer though you can get a hairdryer and Iron from reception. A great stay at a very good cost and I would definately stay there again

  • Liked — The location, friendliness of the staff and cleanliness of the Hotel plus a very comfortable bed
  • Disliked — Shower curtains too short so water kept going on the floor and there was no soakaway
