To start with the positives, this hotel is very well located for exploring the sights of Edingburgh, a street or two away from the Royal Mile and its surrounds and within walking distance of the rail station.
I'm not sure - having read the other reviews - whether my room was the armpit of the hotel, but let me state that I'm used to budget. Budget, this was not. I found my room to be dirty, smudgy walls, bedding smelling sour, which didn't make for a very comfortable sleep.
Staff at reception were dismissive and almost at the point of laughing at another guest for not having a proper reservation (and seemingly no place to go for the night, it being after 11pm at the time). Just added to the grubby feeling of the place.
Amenities standard for budget hotel with sufficient vending machines in lobby (yay!); as far as I could make out, no shampoo and no hairdryer and the shower of such a size that if you turn on the hot water taps, the curtain will rise and cling-wrap its wet self to you and the shower will overflow onto anything that's on the floor (again, this could be because I was relegated to the worst room in the hotel).
Not terribly impressed - and I feel this hotel crossed the line between cheap and nasty.
