I was not originally looking for a hotel in Edinburgh, but all the B&B's (referenced in Rick Steves' book) were already booked up due to the Royal HIghland Festival that weekend. Edinburgh is an expensive city, and this Jurys Inn is in a really good location, one block off of the middle of the Royal Mile.
We made our reservation on the JurysInn.com website. We decided on the Jurys Inn because they did offer a room that would accommodate 3 adults (my wife and I plus our 21 year old son). There really wasn't anything wrong with this hotel, except it is tough to pay so much money, over $500 US dollars, for only 2 nights stay. Despite the foreknowledge that Edinburgh is expensive and the exchange rate is America's problem, that still seems like a bunch for what is supposed to be a value chain hotel. What really bothered me is that the 17.5% VAT that was included in every other hotel's rate that we paid in Great Britian for 2 weeks, turned out to NOT be included in the price we were quoted. A nice $80 surprise at check-out. Plus internet service has a daily fee and parking is several blocks away in a commercial lot, all for extra fees.
It was a clean and modern hotel with good beds and a good bathroom. However, the room we had faced the back and close passage to the Royal Mile. Early morning partying could be heard (especially since we had to leave the windows open because the A/C was either wimpy or non-existent), and the hotel stall seemed to do garbage bottle recycling sorting in the bins early in the morning. I don't think I should have to hear all that for a $250 per night room.
If you are on expense account, don't rule out this hotel. But if you are on vacation on your own dime, the B&B's on Dalkeith Road are worth considering first.

Dear Trip Advisor,
Thank you for your review. I am happy to hear that you found our hotel to be clean and modern. I do apologise regarding the noise, we do recycle most of our waste however it should not be done first thing in the morning. I am a bit confused regarding the VAT as we quote all our rates inclusive of VAT. Please feel free to contact me and I would be more than happy to look into it for you. - barry_rowland@jurysinns.com
