I stayed in Jurys Inn last week for two nights whilst on business. The hotel is quite functional. Clean, tidy perfectly okay. Not five star but then that is reflected in the prices. My room was comfortable. The shower pressure was good and not affected by others having a shower (something I find quite common). The noise between rooms was fine, i.e. I could not hear noise from other rooms as sometimes happens in other hotels. The view from my particular room was over the back of the hotel which was fine because I want quiet, not views. The restaurant was again functional. That means not extravagent or haute cuisine but fine. I had a good meal which was well cooked and enjoyable (and I am a somewhat fussy eater). Breakfast is a little 'fast food' with a single line where you take a tray and add to it whatever you want to eat. I broke with the process and went back each time for a new course. This of course confused the table staff who cleared my place between courses once but were most concerned having done so - which is a good sign.
The key question for someone like me who is fussy about where they stay and has had the opportunity to stay in some excellent hotels around the word is, would I stay there again? Well, the simple answer is yes I would, happily. As I said at the start, it is a four star hotel but perfectly acceptable and nothing to complain about.

I was never a fan of Jury's Inns, particularly the appalling one they've now offloaded at Bristol that my employer kept trying to put me up in. But I stayed at the Glasgow one which was fine and thought I'd give this one go on my own.

Granted as you'll see from the pictures - it is a very ugly modern building - but once inside you are (if you are lucky to get a front room) - looking out over Edinburgh and don't see it. Position great - central and short walk to most of the places that you'd want to go in Edinburgh.

Check in was fine, staff pleasant and I had a room overlooking the station and town - same view as the Scotsman but a quarter of the price!

Room standard roomy modern Jurys - comfortable and clean, like an upmarket Travelodge. Bathroom small - but shower rather than bath helps - cubical a bit dated and small - but great power shower. Double glazing great and room comfy and quiet, only grip would be the towels are a bit small and cardboard like.

Check out was slow with just one person on, through plenty of staff wandering through. Took about 10 mins, but only a 50 yard walk to the station so not too much of an issue.

I got a great rate of £55 room only, on their own web site - so left well satisfied.

Not the best of Jurys

Having stayed in other Jurys Hotels and Inns previously I expected similar standards. Yes the hotel was clean, the rooms spacious, the reception staff were welcoming, there was a good choice at breakfast and the location was central. However, overall I did not feel this hotel was of the same standard as other Jurys hotels / Inns.

The first room I was allocated had the strangest of smells - a combination of a chemical - musty smell. (A previous reviewer also commented on this.) I thought opening the window would be sufficient but there was a large extractor fan located outside the window so it was not feasible to leave it open overnight so I asked to change rooms. The second room was a few floors higher - the chemical smell was not as strong but there was definitely an old musty smell to the room, but I could leave the window open which helped.

The reception staff must have forgot to update the computer system when I changed rooms, as later that evening they allocated my room to another person, and they were trying to gain access but as I had locked the door from the inside couldn't. It wasn't a case of wrong room as their room card had the same number room as mine when I opened the door.

In the bathroom the soap / shower gel bottles were empty. The showers themselves were only lukewarm despite being turned up to the max.

Check out was 12 noon but I may well have checked out at 9.30am as the household staff were so noisy going about their work that it made it impossible to sleep late.

I don't think I will be booking into Jurys Edinburgh again - there are definitely better hotels in Edinburgh to stay .

Stayed in Jury's Inn, Edinburgh in May 2007. The hotel was good.

The bedrooms are in an older building adjacent to the modern reception (as seen in many of the web-site photos), rooms were clean and a reasonable size.

The hotel was also reasonably priced. My rate did not include breakfast, I did eat at the hotel, the food was fair.

Parking is available in a NCP about 100m away for about £10 a night. Location of the hotel is good also, with plenty of bars and restaurants nearby. The location on maps can be a little confusing - even though the hotel is located near "North Bridge" - it is more under North Bridge, you need to drive around via Royal Mile Street and Jeffrey Street to access the hotel by car.

Edinburgh is great city to visit, but walkers be warned there are plenty of hills!
