“great place to stay, but very slow wifi”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 22, 2013

spend a week in this hostel - nice, clean, with character. I stayed in 12 people dorm - rooms are big, well lit, and very clean! Same for bathrooms, and kitchen! Very friendly staff, and short term luggage storage ( even after you've checked out - it saved me). Although, if you want good Internet connection, it isn't place for you.

I stayed here twice, two nights before my tour and one night after. The times before were fantastic. A real 10/10. Room was awesome, facilities on the floor I was on were very clean and well looked after. The time after however I was in the basement and the facilities were a bit dirty, and there were no power points anywhere (well one in the corridor) which was a shame. However overall it was a great experience and id thoroughly recommend them. Awesome common rooms. Incredibly friendly service. Incredibly central. Just awesome.

I stayed here for 3 nights on my recent trip to Edinburgh (not my first time around).

Although I am not a fan of Hostels, this one is very nice.
It is clean, has a lot of facilities, free WiFi (though slow at peak times) and is among the cheapest ones in town.
The rooms are nice and have interesting names.
You can see that someone has put a lot of afford into this place as it is very detailed. There are funky paintings all over the place and it feels like one of those cool backpacker places every traveler tells you about.

Haven't tried the breakfast as I don't like cereals. But it for about 2 Pounds you can get something to start your day.

Don't forget to bring some earplugs, as you very likely have to share your room with 7 other people.

Minus point is that there is no socket in any of the room. You have to give your phone to the receptionist to charge it (which might be safer anyway).

Room Tip: Take earplugs with you!

Have you ever lived in a castle? Stay here and it feels like living in a real castle which is converted in a hostel. Its a huge place with lots of people around. It felt like staying at the Uni again.

It has all basic things you would expect from a good hostel... confy (bunk) bed, good (common) shower, massive (shared) kitchen, and huge (shared) breakout area. It also offers unlimited Tea, Coffee and Hot Chocolate, friendly and helpful staff and freedom to socialise with other travellers.
Best thing about this place is its location. Its located 30 sec walk from Edinburgh Castle :)

Parking is free from 6:30 PM to 8:30 AM outside.
They have free wi-fi in common rooms.
Kitchen may get busy at peak times. Dont expect any of 9 fridges to have any space :)

Room Tip: Be prepared to share your room with complete strangers... this is a hostel not a luxurious hotel.

Great hostel in Edinburgh. The hostel has a warm and welcome atmosphere, staff here are friendly and helpful. The location is great, really close to the Edinburgh Castle, and the city centre, the room I stayed had a great view of Edinburgh Castle. Most importantly, it is good value for money. I would definitely recommend it.

The best about this hostel is the location, just in front of the castle! The staff is very nice and the hostel offers everything one would need.
The rooms (private) are small and cozy but tidy and clean.

Castle Rock lives from it's atmosphere. I wouldn't call the rooms or the bathrooms great, but they are satisfying. The location is great, the staff is very lovely and due to it's size the atmosphere is great. The common areas are very cosy. The internet connection is pretty poor but that shouldn't be too important. The place is also secure, you are only allowed to enter if you show your card to the porter. The breakfast includes cereal, a bun with jam and a glass of juice for £1,50. Compared to other hostels in Great Britain I would call this place good and I would stay here again.
