“Good quality for the price.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 21, 2013

For the money paid, this was decent. I stayed in a 8 bedroom girl dorm, there were nice big lockers to put my rucksack in. The beds were allright, the room clean, the only reason why I did not have a great sleep was a heavy snorer in the room, but this is not the hostel's fault.
It is quite basic, but again, for the price and the location, right next to the castle, I don't think you can ask for more.

We stayed here with three people in a three people room. The room is rather small, not so clean, and the bathrooms small and dirty. Don't give them your stuff in deposit, as they treat it REALLY without care. Location is quite good though.

Sorry you feel that way. You drivers licence clearly had an old crack in it. As I did point out to you, there was grime or dirt inside the crack, just like you would expect to see from a damaged card sitting in a wallet for some time. There is no possible way we could have cracked it. You used it as a key deposit, it goes directly into a filing cabinet, into a little paper wallet, where it sits until you check out and ask for it back. It is handled for the few moments it takes to walk from the desk to the filing cabinet. If your licence is anything like mine it is very rarely taken out of my wallet, and very rarely inspected. Perhaps the more likely story is you just didn't notice your card was cracked until it was out of your wallet and in your hand.

Had to leave after two nights, dorm got uncomfortable with 5 men as i am a solo 22yr old female traveller (same sex dorms were booked up, also seven nations rugby scotland vs italy was coming up). Room only had one curtain so light was still coming in... And its very bright. Warm rooms though, beds were good, sheets could be cleaner. LOCATION is everything - across the road are the stairs that lead straight to Edinburgh castle. 5min walk to main city centre. STAFF were decent - few females seemed a bit hostile, wanted to leave early to go elsewhere and asked for some help, was told the place i wanted to go was a 45min walk... Some assistance with calling a taxi wouldve been nice as they still got my full stay payment. Main TOILETS AND SHOWERS are unisex and were clean and plenty. There is a segregated female only bathroom aswell.

It is understandable if you were uncomfortable with all guys in the room. It is a mixed room that you booked, so unfortunately we can't guarantee there will be an even balance of male and female. We did move you into a female dorm, when you said you were uncomfortable. Sorry the taxi wasn't offered, we are happy to help you with these things though.

We had an AWESOME time at Castle Rock. The location is amazing (right on the steps of the castle), the rooms and common areas are full of character, and the staff is super nice. They have a decent luggage storage room and lounge area is nice....
Spent couple of hours playing pool...

If you stay there, be sure you walk the whole hostel. They have an awesome reading room, and even the back stairs have character. Rooms have lovely views of the city.

We stayed in a 12 person mixed dorm room no 41...bed names were really fancy....apple catchers...g strings.... N so on....

It's a nice place to meet people's ....make freinds....

If iam in city again would love to stay there....

Room Tip: Book early...as they are packed most of times....

Overall, good, clean, safe hostel with decent staff.

My double private room was VERY basic, even by hostel standards!! The room contained a double bed and a sink. NOTHING else, which meant bags, clothes, everything was dumped on the floor, could really use an IKEA trip to buy some cheap bedside tables or something!!

The bed also didn't have a mattress, just two foam sheets on top of each other. My wife slept fine, I didnt.

Location is awesome!

Overall, a good solid hostel!

The hostel looks like a historic place. I stayed here for two nights. The hostel is near Edinburgh castle. It's also a good place to meet fellow traveller. The beds and sheets could be made better. I did not like the bed sheets I was given for the night. I think it was not cleaned. The hostel is good value for money. The shower and toilets are good. Internet is free but wee bit slow. Teas and coffee are free.
