“They forgot our 6am wake up call”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 24, 2013

My husband had an early morning business meeting and work to do before it and the hotel forgot our 6am wake up call so we overslept.....a very bad start to the day.
The hotel is part of an imposing Victorian terrace in a lovely street about an 8 minute walk to the Edinburgh Castle end of Princes Street. (On the way you pass Affogato in Queensferry Street where they have great ice cream made on the premises, it's really good).
Back to the hotel, our room was on the third floor facing the front with a lovely view of the gardens and the top of the Episcopal Cathedral (a wonderful gothic building built in 1879 and worth a visit). The room was comfortable, functional and clean and had a very large bed. Although it faced the front is was quiet. The bathroom was tiny and had no extras such as a shower cap. We also missed a room safe.
Nice breakfast with very friendly, helpful staff in the dining room.
We had a lot of trouble with the Internet connection in the room which, in all fairness, the hotel took very seriously and did its best to remedy.
We would try the hotel again, but the missing wake up call and bad Internet connection was very inconvenient and that is why we haven't given it a higher rating.

I recently stayed at the Bonham on a Thursday night treat with my husband and was very pleased when we arrived as the lobby and general feel of the hotel was luxe and modern which I love. However, on entering our room I was a little disappointed. The furniture was old fashioned (in a bad way) and a bit shabby (not chic) and the bathroom was nothing special with a dodgy shower (over the bath). The towels were not fluffy and plush but rather crispy and old. The tea making facilities were standard – with cheap tea/coffee rather than anything a bit more special (when we stayed at the Caledonian Hotel once, we had our own posh coffee pod machine which was lovely). The 4 poster bed was actually 3 poster as one of the drapes marking out a post was missing! I was a little disappointed to be honest as this was a superior room and not cheap!! The bed was very comfy however with nice linen and the view outside of the room was beautiful. The staff were friendly however and the breakfast was nice but with terrible service – no toast came until the end and we had to ask for sauce 3 times and when it finally came we had finished our breakfast! We stayed next door at the B+B Edinburgh recently which felt much more upmarket with nice décor, posh refreshment facilities and was less than half the price. I know where I’ll be going back to next time!!

We stayed here for our second visit last month. Got a room with an amazing view. Comfy bed with excellent quality bedding and so silent we slept like logs. A beautiful building which is impeccably kept. got parked out the back which is a real luxury in Edinburgh. Good breakfast too.
The foreign receptionist asked us on arrival if this was our first visit to Scotland, which set us both into hysterical giggles. (If you heard how Scottish our accents actually were, you would realise why we thought this was funny!)
Would return again and again to The Bonham.

The Bonham Hotel is absolutely delightful and a real gem. Quietly situated in the West End, it is probably Edinburgh’s only real ‘boutique’ hotel, and still only a few minutes walk into the city centre.

The bedrooms are delightful with high quality linen and good bathrooms, I always get a good night’s sleep there. The complimentary wi-fi works well in the rooms, as it does throughout the hotel.

Breakfast and dinner are most enjoyable, with high standards of ingredients, preparation and table service. There is a small, well stocked bar tucked away at the rear, ideal for a drink before and after dinner.

There is a small car park behind the hotel, which is an amazing bonus for a city centre hotel. Sometimes it can get a bit full, but you can leave the keys at reception if you have had to block another car in – I’ve always managed to get a space one way or another.

We stumbled across the Bonham when we spent a very uncomfortable night in a hotel with a bad bed (for us!) in Edinburgh and consulted our ipad the next morning and were able to gewt a room at the Bonham. This is terrific little hotel. We left our bags there at lunch and on our return for check-in they were in our room. The room was very clean and modern, but maintained an old world feel: the bed was sooo comfy. The hotel has an excellent full breakfast with healthy options in the Restaurant at The Bonham. We ate dinner there and that too was an excellent experience. BUT the really nice part is the little bar tucked in the back that only opened a couple of years ago. Lewis is a wonderful, friendly bartender who can mix anything (a great manhattan) and is friendfly without being intrusive. The intimacy means that one can stay low in a corner or mix with other guests: just fun. Our last minute room was on the first floor so no view, but on our return a week later, we had a third floor room with a view across Edinburgh. The pricing in the hotel is comparable (or a bit more) to the Edinburgh Hilton and includes breakfast and wi-fi. If you are an adult couple or single you will find this to be a way better experience for a marginal difference.

Room Tip: second floor and up

My wife and I visited The Bonham for afternoon tea and enjoyed the experience greatly. Service was truly excellent. Food was good (I thought it odd to serve egg sandwiches (in part because I don't eat egg) but my better have said they were superb) particularly the cake selection.

Great setting too- although the private car park at the rear is as small as you would expect in Edinburgh where parking is at a premium.
