My brand-new wife and I stayed here on the first night of our honeymoon in Edinburgh - we would have stayed for longer but we just couldn't afford it! The weather was awful but that simply gave us an excuse to luxuriate in our surroundings in the Library Suite, and luxuriate we did! Time stood still as we took in the splendour of it all, from the wonderful (if jarringly modern) kitchen, to the amazing bathroom with its underfloor heating, 2-person bath and scrumptious selection of toiletries! In trying to describe how wonderful it all was, I find myself rapidly running out of superlatives - this is quite simply the most magnificent hotel we have ever stayed in without exception. The bed was huge, and hugely comfortable too, and the TV and DVD player hidden in the red leather chest at the end of the bed was a lovely touch. The outside world just didn't exist. We could have stayed there in that one room for a week and never gotten tired of it.

The extremely friendly and helpful staff also deserve a mention. They couldn't do enough for us, we were treated like royalty the whole time, and they all deserve immense praise for their friendliness and professionalism.

We recreated the evening when we got engaged at the Witchery by having dinner in the Secret Garden, and once again words fail me. The food is simply superb and the waiting staff are without exception the best in the business - attentive without being overly fussy.

Breakfast in our room the next morning was also a huge treat. Forget about a fry-up - the continental breakfast, brought to your room in a huge hamper, was fantastic. There's fresh orange juice, wonderful coffee and tea, cereals, luxury jams and marmalades and the most delicious brioche I have ever tasted.

Over the next few years, we plan to stay in each of the 7 rooms in the Witchery at least once, and I can't wait to go back!

My husband and I started our two week stay in Scotland by spending two nights at the Witchery in the Vestry Suite. What a great property this is with a very friendly and accommodating staff. There was lots of privacy but your needs were attended to just for the asking. The suites were thematically decorated and great attention was paid to detail. The restaurant was fabulous, the staff attentive, and the food was five-star. No one was rushed, and the evening was quite relaxing. While pricey, I highly recommend a stay here. Many celebrities have frequented this establishment - probably as much for their respect of privacy as for the uniqueness of it all. I understand from our staff that Dan Brown stayed in our suite while "The DaVinci Code" was filming in Scotland. It is one of those places that leave fond memories for many years!

  • Liked — How very unique it is and the wonderful dining experience
  • Disliked — Nothing...it was fabulous
  • Tips/Secrets: — Book way ahead of time as only 7 suites are available.

This was our second stay (and hopefully the second of many) at this bewitching and beguiling hotel.

The rooms are opulent, indulgent and ridiculously lavish. Staff spoil you from the moment you arrive and are discreet when the need arises.

The designer of the suites is to be applauded. I am vaguely jealous of such a creative talent.

This has to be my favourite hotel in the world and I advise only those with romance and magic in their hearts and souls to go. If you don't get it, don't stay - it's not for you!

I am making a wish that I will be back there soon!

Blessed be.

  • Liked — The sheer luxury!

  • Tips/Secrets: — Don't be glum if you can't get in the restaurants - go to Rhubabrb - it's fab!

Don't hink we'd classify this as a hotel, or even B&B. Suffice it to say that it's one of the most exquisite places we've ever had the pleasure of staying at. We were lucky to book the Guard Room for one night. We dropped off our bags at the restaurant before taking a long walk through the old city. When we returned and finally went to the room it felt like we were taking a room in a castle, what with the walk up a spiraling turret....The unit itself was decorated with an array of military parapharnelia, including uniforms from different historic periods, photographs, maps....It had 5 rooms, including a kitchen and a bathroom with a gorgeous freestanding tub. The anteroom had a working fireplace and even in July, it made for an incredibly romantic evening. The bedroom had a 4-poste bed and a unit where the TV and DVD where hidden...push a button, and technology appeared. The staff was incredible...turn down service was included and part of it was having candles and soft music in place by the time we returned from dinner...and the breakfast.....WOW!!!!! There is just so much more we could write...just take our word...if ever in Edinburgh, do anything you can to book a room there!!!

  • Liked — The location and historic charm
  • Disliked — Only the price may be an issue.
