Having only recently discovered the Tripadvisor website, I'm afraid I am a little late in adding my comments about this fabulous hotel but felt I had to say something as it was so fantastic. Well, I say hotel, myself and my husband actually stopped in The Guardroom, which was in a newly refurbished but very old building opposite the main hotel; and it was what I would consider to be a large Apartment/Suite rather than just any ordinary hotel room.
Our weekend in Edinburgh was a surprise booking for our 3rd wedding anniversary, and we were not to be disappointed. The Suite was absolutely fantastic. After checking in at reception, we were guided up a lovely stone spiral staircase and up to the Guardoom by a very polite member of staff. We were then shown around the apartment and talked through everything we needed to know about.
There was a small lobby with a chais-long, table, bottle of champers & a small tray of chocolates. Off the lobby, behind a secret panelled wall was the self-catering kitchen with all the necessary facilities. Walking down the long hallway, first room was the sitting room, with 2 sofas, book shelves and open fireplace. At the time we were there, the gas fires were being re-flued so we were unable to use them but this wan't a major problem.
The next room along the hallway was the bathroom. Again, a lovely wooden panelled room with rolltop bath and the biggest sink I have ever seen!
The final room at the end of the hallway was the bedroom. Lovely and big, a cd had already been put on for us and was playing eerie and atmospheric monk chant music. We had a private table & chairs (for breakfast the following day) in one corner, a large antique wardrobe and at the foot of the bed was the piece de resistance, an ottoman, with a flick of a switch, lifted up and produced the TV!
The breakfast the following morning was delivered to our door in a huge wicker picnic basket and contained a lovely array of treats.
All in all, out 2 night stay (minimum of 2 nights stay at £250 a night so not cheap!) at The Witchery was total indulgence and oppulence, and although we had to book a year in advance due to popularity, it's definitely on our wish list of return visits.
(Apologies for the poor quality photos!)
