Having booked our recent stay at The Witchery as a surprise for my husband's 40th birthday, what can I say? No words can possibly adequately describe our stay in The Guard Room a few days ago. We enjoyed our stay so much that we did not want to leave, it was a real wrench. Everything about our time there was perfect, from the lovely, warm welcome we received from Roxy (what a nice gentleman), to the nicely chilled champagne and chocolates awaiting us, as well as the fabulously filling breakfast we ate the next morning, the whole experience was a dream!
Wow! What a room The Guard Room is!
It is actually a large suite of rooms, with a small reception area, a kitchenette, and off the long passage way lies a small, but exquisite dining room, a jaw dropping, wood panelled bathroom and the most beautiful bedroom anyone could wish for!
The rooms are dark wood, full of theatrical reds, burgundys and plums, with the exception of the bedroom which is a bold green colour. Along the beautiful passage way are mannequins dressed in old guards' uniforms, totally breath-taking.
The bathroom contains a large, deep bath, big enough for two! And we loved the constant underfloor heating - what luxury! It was hard to leave and we felt really decadent, lying in the bath sipping chilled champagne and nibbling chocolates.
Our favourite room though was the bedroom, huge with a majestic four poster bed that you literally had to climb onto, it was that high! The room has windows on both sides that look out over the rooftops of Edinburgh. It contains various pieces of military memorabilia and items of period furniture, which, combined together create a pleasing impression.
Everthing about our stay was truly magical and we cannot fault The Witchery, from the check-in arrangements, to the checking- out, when Roxy asked if we wanted to leave our suitcase so we could spend a few more precious hours exploring Edinburgh. We will definitely return tin the near future to sample the delights of another room in the collection. The problem is - which one?
