We booked a £250-room (which I am sure you can avoid by booking earlier than 2 days in advance). Accordingly we expected a 5-star experience. But although we were in one of the recently refurbished so-called Club Rooms with Castle View on the 6th floor, we were rather disappointed about the state of the hotel: Our next-door neighbours were well audible through an interconnecting door, the Mini-Bar fridge did not work, the TV only had a few channels, some of them without sound, nasty cheap chocolate as a welcome treat etc. Maybe this is good enough for the hotel's normal clientel who come for a weekend of nightlife and shopping, but for anyone seeking a more pampering hotel-experience to go with the adjoint Spa, the hotel urgently needs to spend some money on its infrastructure.

Having said that, the personnel was very nice and a conversation with the manager about our pains resulted in a discount on our final bill.

My husband and I stayed at the hotel to celebrate our silver wedding anniversary. We had already decided to spend the day at the wonderful OneSpa so tagged on a night in the hotel. We had a club suite which looked out over the castle . There were a couple of disappointments with the room.
Firstly it was so dark. What is it with hotels not providing ceiling lighting? Even during the day with all of the available lighting on it was dark.
And then the bathroom. There has been more than enough written in reviews on this. I think it is time the hotel management took note. The handle for the flush for our toilet was loose, the fascia over the lighting above the sink had dropped to show the bare bulbs, and I could have done a better job with the grouting and sealant on the tiles. This is not good enough for a 5* hotel. At breakfast the 4 people sitting behind us were telling each other tales of how bad their bathrooms were too.
But these issues aside ( and for some people they will be important in their decision on where to stay) we thought the staff were great from the welcome at reception, to the people we met in the corridors and in the restaurant.
OneSpa is a wonderful place to spend the day. I don't know how it could be described as cold - it has a suite of 7 or 8 ways of spending time in heat rooms. It is a day spa - you have to pay for it but there is a discounted rate for residents. There is a wide range of treatments but if you want some while you are there be sure to book early as the Spa is very popular.

Stayed here for 3 nights from Mrch 5th to 8th 2008.

Lovely hotel and NOT tired or dirty at all !!! FAR FROM IT.

Gorgeous decor and spotless clean with the most helpful and courteous of staff throughout the hotel.

Our Room was very nice and clean with everything you'd expect from a five star hotel.

The Spar pool, hydro pool and leisure facilities are the best i have come across and the staff again very helpful and attentative.

The hotel is well situated for both the new and old towns and i highly recommend anyone to stay here, especially for the breakfast which is fantastic.

I can see no reason for the negative comments here and feel they are unjustified completely.

Feb 25, 2008 | Trip type: Friends getaway

we stayed at the sheraton for 1 night in February. our room was not ready until 3pm. we were meant to be given a 3 person room for £229, but at the reception we were told it was actually £304! the room itself was awful, not a suite. it was dark, dirty, shabby and tired looking. the toilet flush was falling off the wall in the bathroom, and it looked like tiles had been removed and bolted back on again. we got our room changed (down graded to a normal club room) which was actually better, but the price was not reduced. the third bed was actually a half size rollout and the proper beds were also small. as there was 3 of us we presumed we would get 3 of everything in the room, but had to phone reception several times to get extra towels, glasses, cups, tea bags etc..We were also kept awake for much of the night by a baby crying in the next room and by someones hairdryer. rooms have very thin walls!! the hotel itself just looks unkept. we did not get breakfast with our room rate, and as it would have been an extra £18 each, we decied to eat else where. We used the spa on the sunday, which was very nice, but not worth £20 each when i already felt as if we'd been over charged. only the pool can be used for free, all saunas, steam rooms etc had to be paid for. we were left with an overall feeling of being ripped off. i would not recommend this hotel to anyone, it really ruined what would have been a good weekend away.

Dear Guest

My name is JP Kavanagh and I am the General Manager here at The Sheraton Grand Hotel & Spa. I wanted to get in touch in relation to the review you posted on Trip Advisor dated 25th February 2008.

I was concerned to read of your experiences during your time here and the negative impression this left with you of our property. We do try and get it right 100% of the time, but clearly, on this occasion, we did not meet your expectations.

I can only apologise that we could not have done more for you during your time with us but I would welcome the opportunity to make amends should you return to Edinburgh. To this end please do not hesitate to contact me directly if you have any queries.

Kind regards.

The Sheraton is a fabulous hotel - from the minute we arrived to when we left, everything was fabulous. As it was our first stay at a Sheraton hotel, we were upgraded to an executive room , which was at the front of the hotel with a view of the castle - although, from down on the road, you can't see that much off the castle. The room was huge, the bed massive and the bathroom was lovely. As part of the upgrade you get access to the executive lounge with free drinks and canapes, newspapers, magazines, television etc from 5.30 to 7 pm every night, which is lovely before going out for dinner.
The staff at the hotel are great and the location is very convenient for the castle, parliament, the royal mile etc.
The spa is great, although you do have to pay extra to use some of the thermal facilities.
We would certainly stay here again.
