“The Cosmopolitan Centre of the City”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 6, 2013

A great street to walk up and down, full of visitors to the city. It is lined with tourist shops and places of historical interest

“Mostly tatty souvenir shops”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed January 5, 2013

Such a shame.

One of the most historic streets in Britain, with some truly beautiful architecture. However most of the properties, especially the closer you get to the castle, are occupied by shabby souvenir shops selling cheap and nasty "XXXX went to Edinburgh and all they got me was this lousy t-shirt"-type goods. Some of the shops even had half the letters missing from their signage, which seemed especially poor given the amount of money they must be making at the expense of visitors. Everywhere you looked there were stores with almost identical names selling identical tartan and clan-based stuff. I suspect, sadly, that none of it is actually made in Scotland, though. Interesting to see 'deluxe' kilts made of some poly-something which was definitely NOT wool.

There ARE a couple of decent-looking shops - we intentionally looked out for them- but they are well in the minority and look out of place in amongst the others. We visited on 02 January, and it was just these few who had made any kind of effort for Christmas in their displays, we noticed.

A couple of the pubs looked reasonable. We had a drink at the Mitre, and that was cosy and quite nice, with some local real ales. Whiski and The World's End also looked worth going into, but other than that ...

A "tourist-trap" in the worst possible sense. I was genuinely sad to see how shabby it looked, a decade after my last trip to Edinburgh. On my next trip, I will avoid the Royal Mile.

“Pleasant stroll”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 5, 2013

The overall feel is good and the architecture is mainly interesting, particularly the castle end but there are too many similar shops, mainly cashmere & tartan. We did enjoy some time in a whisky shop searching for a favourite malt, and there was an interesting looking fudge shop too.
