I would truly love to give this hotel a superb review, but simply cannot do so. The hotel is lovely, the wait staff superb, and affords a very convenient location. But, they abused my debit card, throwing myself into a world of chaos on what was supposed to be an enjoyable vacation. Upon booking on-line, they are ONLY LEGALLY allowed to charge one night's stay, leaving the remainder of the night's upon the discretion of the guest as to how to pay. Imagine my surprise, checking into the hotel that they had fully debited my entire stay! This threw myself into hours of phone time to America,(and plenty of on-hold time), to my bank trying to resolve financial turmoil, as we had been on vacation for quite some time at this point. The manager did agree to debit my card back, then the front desk team asked for a credit card for incidentals. I obliged, but imagine my surprise upon check-out, when they show another night stay billed after I had payed the hotel stay in cash after their blatant display of incompetance. The guest services manager, Max, as I was told, was recently promoted from housekeeping and I believe that he should embark in a course on public relations. I am still waiting for the manager, Thomas, to get back to me for a chance to make restitution for their actions as he promised he would by the 3rd of July.

Though we only stopped through Edinburgh for a one night stay, our experience was wonderful. We had the average room, but it was beautiful! Extremely clean, luxurious, inviting and comfortable. The bathroom was spacious and also very clean with Crabtree & Evelyn toiletries as the bathroom amenities. We were able to pick the classical music station on the television and play Beethoven throughout the room and the bathroom. The view of Edinburgh Castle from our corner room was even better. Front desk, concierge and bell service exceptional and very helpful. A poor old bellman in his kilt lifted my huge suitcase for me! Located right on High Street, it is only a minute walk outside into the downtown area. Lots of good shops and fantastic view of the castle. Interesting menu of Scottish cuisine. An overall great experience.

  • Liked — The friendly staff and great room.
  • Disliked — The food on the menu.

2 nights on business.

Simply a class of their own.

Fine looking building, overlooked by the castle.

I arrived at 0030hrs having and had my flight cancelled and made other travel arrangements.

Reception was large and impressive, The receptionist kept me waiting a whole 3 seconds before giving the terrible news that i was forced to accept a room upgrade.

Room was...well... SUPERB!! only problem was that no map was supplied to help me find my way around it ;)

hotel was spotless, décor was immaculate, furnishings plush and appropriate.

Wanted to visit an old haunt, asked receptionist for directions, he instantly went on line and i was handed a multi map print out with directions. That's what i call service!!

Breakfast was very intimidating, far too much selection for this humble and weary traveller and the way the waiting staff kept insisting I have just one more glass of the fantastic fresh orange juice left me nearly unable to leave the table. How anyone survives this culinary sensory overload for more than 2 days i just don't know.

I really cant do the dinner/ lunch experience justice, but i think you get the idea.

I found the incredible array of whisky bottles stacked artfully behind the bar rather hypnotic, I do think that my condition was also due in part to the beer i was served by the ever pleasant and efficient staff. Again customers service at its best.

Would i recommend the Caledonian Hilton Edinburgh?

Only if you want to experience the very best there is.

This is the fourth time I have stayed at this lovely centrally located hotel and it gets better and better.

Once again we were upgraded to a delux twin room (438) with castle view, it was a very spacious room, although the bathroom was small in comparison (nevertheless it was adequate).

Daily fresh fruit and water, plus wine and chocolates on arrival were nice extra touches.

Breakfast was good, although much less in terms of fresh fruit available at breakfast time (surpising since summer season).

Staff were as always wonderful, the conceirge team are excellent and the whole team do everything to make your stay comfortable.

Overall we found the hotel excellent, curteous, helpful staff, great location and a perfect place for a weekend retreat.

Arrived late on a Sunday afternoon and had to wait some time before we could get in as the car park was apparently "full", then suddenly the barrier went up and we found several available places. Check-in was a little slow considering this 2 night stay had been booked and paid for several months in advance, the receptionist appeared to be taking an age to decide which room to put us in.
During our entire stay, we never set eyes on a single doorman - which is ironic as this seems to be their trade mark.
Our room was on the fifth (top) floor, which meant it was quite small, with a high window, but we did have a castle view, and the bathroom was huge, and also had a window with castle view, which is rare in hotels these days. Being on the fifth floor also seemed to mean you had to wait about 10 minutes before you had any hot water through the tap - a point to remember if you are a late riser and want a shower before breakfast!
Dinner was included on the first night, and this provided good choice, and was very nice - but most of the sweets were unavailable. A little disappointing. Breakfast not so good. The dining room was busy and extremely hot. Virtually no fresh fruit apart from a few grapes - when I enquired, I was told they had not had a delivery of fresh fruit that morning- which did not entirely surprise me as it was a bank holiday Monday. I suspect forward planning was missing here. Breakfast was slightly better on the second day when the hotel was obviously not so full, and probably a lot of people were catching up on sleep from their disturbed night.
It was lovely to have windows we could open, and the bedroom was a nice temperature for sleeping. Air con worked well, but I always prefer an open window. We can confirm that the fire alarms work very well, as they decided to go off at 4 a.m. This probably shows up the disadvantage of being on the top floor.
I suspect not all guests left the building (though how they could stand the racket of the alarm beats me) A member of staff was at the bottom of the stairs to guide us in the correct direction (to the car park at the back of the hotel) we received no information or guidance from then on until we actually asked someone. The fire brigade attended, and finally we were allowed back to our rooms. The usual letter of apology was posted at reception in the morning. It took us back to our honeymoon night when the same thing happened - 25 years ago.!!
All in all, a pleasant enough place to stay, but rather over-priced when comparing with some other Hiltons. Our 2 night stay here was twice the price of our 2 nights at St Helen's - and the room was smaller ,and not so friendly staff as at St Helens.
