First, my only complaint. I wish they had put directions from the train station on their website. It really is an easy walk but only if you know where you're heading when you leave the station (essentially it's the opposite end of Princes Street from the station!)
Now all my commendations.
First, it is a great setting right below the Castle. Sure it's a hike up the hill but if you're not quite up to it, the Hop On/Hop Off buses stop right across the street and there always seemed to cabs available.
Second, we had a great room with air conditioning. Admittedly it may have been because I am a Platinum member of Hilton Honors that they upgraded us to a suite but it was a very nice room with a very relaxed setting. (Edinburgh was experiencing a heat wave and I did notice that some of the higher floors apparently needed to have their windows open.)
Third, while we had a couple of minor problems with the room, attendants were always at our door with minutes of our calls. That sort of staff attention extended to the dining room personnel where the hostesses took time to learn our names and greeted us by name at both breakfast and dinner within a day of our arrival. Made for a very warm and welcoming stay.
We loved the historic nature of the hotel, including the delightful picture of Roy Rogers and Dale Evans leading Trigger up the central staircase. We thought of that picture every time we climbed the steps.
One comment. As observed elsewhere, our bed was probably one of the strangest we have ever experienced (and I spend about 150 nights a year in hotels.) My wife swears the mattress was made of straw. Not that it was terribly uncomfortably but definitely not modern Sweet Dreams standards.
I don't know if we'll be back in Edinburgh any time soon but we'll certainly give the Caledonian a serious look for a return visit if we are.
