“Great Hotel, ideal location for shopping and tourist attractions - just mind the queue for breakfast.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 10, 2012

We've just returned from a business/social trip to Edinburgh and moved to the Caledonian for our 2nd night of the stay. The facilities inside the hotel and service are excellent. We thoroughly enjoyed late night drinks in Peacock Alley, which is ideal for relaxing with family, friends or the papers. Our room was very well appointed, although quite a long walk along various corridors. Unfortunately we only had a view of the car park. Shower was superb, as was large screen tv and coffee machine. Some great touches. Most annoying and dissappointing was the 25 minute wait for breakfast! We've never queued for breakfast in any other hotel before and to do it in a hotel of this calibre was extremely dissappointing. We weren't even offered orange juice or coffee whilst we waited. We were then annoyed to see that waiting guests were seated in preferential order and not per length of wait. Clearly if you pay more you get better service! When we pointed this out they were clearly embarrassed to have been found out. Once seated the food was very good but the staff could not cope with the volume. Not great for a hotel of this standard, glad we did not book for dinner.

Room Tip: Check how far it is to your room, or ask for help with luggage. Corridors are fairly long and narro...

Overall, it would appear that you have had an enjoyable trip to Edinburgh, and I appreciate your positive feedback with regards to your Peacock Alley experience, this is certainly a popular area with all of our guests.

On the other hand, I would like to apologise for the delay in service whilst you joined us for breakfast, and your comments have been shared with our food & beverage manager who shall act accordingly.

We look forward to welcoming you back to the 'Caley' again in the future.

I travel extensively and extremely often staying in hotels all over the world from Antigua to London and the Maldives but from now on my benchmark is the service and the standards of the Waldorf Astoria Caledonia Hotel Edinburgh. All I want to say is thank you to all the staff for making our stay 5 star and we can't wait for our next visit. Stuart & Margaret

“Beautiful Hotel, Perfect for Scotland Vacation”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 6, 2012

This hotel is beautiful and has an amazing view of the Edinburgh castle. We stayed here in January, when it was freezing outside and it was so wonderful to come back to the room or go to their cozy bar and warm up. It's location is pretty good, there is plenty to see within walking distance. If you don't mind hills, you can even walk up to the castle. This hotel's classic charm made Scotland even more magical, I loved it and would return again.

“Nice Hotel if you get the right room!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed December 5, 2012

We stayed at the hotel for 3 nights in early November as a special birthday treat. We had booked a Queen room, so werent expecting a castle view, but what we didnt expect was no view at all, apart from the room opposite us and some pipe works!
The room was lovely but very very dark, and genuinely if we'ed known what the view was going to be like no way would we have booked this hotel.
We immediately phoned reception to report we were not happy with the room and were assured someone would call us back. After half an hour and no responce we again called reception, who assured us someone would call us??!! Eventually we received a call from the duty manager who basically said all Queen rooms had internal views, they were full, but if we were prepared to pay an extra £40 a night we could be moved! some contradiction here i think. By this stage we had had enough and decided to bite the bullet, unpack and stay in the dark room.
Ok it didnt completely spoil our weekend, but i do think the hotel should make guests aware that they may possibly not get a view of any greenery, trees or even streets, and they make have to keep their curtains shut at all times as the guests opposite can see into your room!
That said the hotel is lovely but we certainly won't be returning.

Room Tip: Dont book a queen room and expect a view of anything!

Dear guest,

thank you for taking the time to post a review following your recent stay with us. Unfortunately however, it does appear that you were not entirely satisfied with your overall experience with us, including the bedroom that you were allocated. As stated, due to the high business levels we were experiencing, a complimentary up-grade could not be offered as our castle view rooms are obviously high on demand. Never-the-less, I shall pass on your feedback with regards to the manner in which we communicate this to the relevant departments, and I do hope that this does not deter you from returning to the 'Caley' again in the future.

Kind regards,

Chris Logan

“Beautiful old hotel with modern updates and welcoming, attentive staff”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 4, 2012

We spent a week at the Caledonian in November. The hotel was extremely comfortable, and had a nice bustle of travelers and locals in its bar and restaurants. Afternoon tea in Peacock Alley was excellent, with delicious cakes, scones and sandwiches - too many to finish in one sitting. The full Scottish breakfast (amply full and fresh buffet) each morning was part of our room rate and a great deal. The best part of our stay was the kind attention from the friendly and delightful staff. Everyone from the bell men and concierges to the waitstaff and housekeepers were terrific. Always asked us what we had visited that day, greeted us at every turn, and had many helpful tips for our first visit to this stunning city. Finally, the Galvin Brasserie is a gem - a cool cafe with pure French bistro style food, be sure to try the dessert soufflé!

Room Tip: Castle view rooms are truly awesome. In addition to stunning Edinburgh Castle, these rooms overlook...

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
The Caledonian, A Walforf Astoria Hotel, or the “Caley” as it has become affectionately known among Edinburgh folk, was and still is the epitome of style and excellence. The large, rose-coloured Permian sandstone façade, quarried in Dumfries, dominates the skyline of the city’s west end. The hotel has not only remained a focal point for more than one hundred years, but a symbol of the very best of Scottish hospitality. The Caley’s pivotal position at the very heart of Edinburgh has always been its greatest asset. Created out of the 19th century railway boom, the five star hotel is looking to the future with confidence and pride in its ability to keep pace with the times. The hotel’s reputation is as justified now as it was when the hotel first opened its doors in 1903. ... more   less
