We stayed at the Caledonian for 2 nights mid october in a King Hilton Suite. We travelled to the hotel by car and parked it in the hotel car park at a cost of £9.50 per 24hrs.
It is a very Grand hotel, with long wide corridors and large grand staircase. It has also kept alot of it's original features and grandeur.
Check in went smooth and fairly quickly. Our room was on the second floor with spectacular views of Edinburgh castle. As it was a suite is was a large room with seperate sitting room. The bed and pillows were very comfortable. Bathrobes and slippers were also provided. The room was very clean and fresh fruit had been left on the table for us to enjoy. The only down site of the room was that it can be quite noisy with people and traffic from the street below, but i suppose this is what you have to expect from having a prime location in the city.
The food was excellent. Breakfast has a choice of fruit, bread, cereal or cooked scottish breakfast. Everything was fresh. The restaurant staff were very friendly and helpfull. Dinner was also good but the only problem we had was that the menu for the second night was the same as the first, and it wasnt a big choice. But food quality was excellent. We decided to eat in the hotel bar on the 2nd night, The Caley, which claims to have 232 different kinds of whisky to try. Again the food was good.
The leisure facilities are good, but not great. The pool is pretty small, but was never busy when we were there. The gym is also small and a bit dated.
All in all, we had an excellent 2 nights in this 5* hotel.
