We stayed at the Caledonian for 2 nights mid october in a King Hilton Suite. We travelled to the hotel by car and parked it in the hotel car park at a cost of £9.50 per 24hrs.

It is a very Grand hotel, with long wide corridors and large grand staircase. It has also kept alot of it's original features and grandeur.

Check in went smooth and fairly quickly. Our room was on the second floor with spectacular views of Edinburgh castle. As it was a suite is was a large room with seperate sitting room. The bed and pillows were very comfortable. Bathrobes and slippers were also provided. The room was very clean and fresh fruit had been left on the table for us to enjoy. The only down site of the room was that it can be quite noisy with people and traffic from the street below, but i suppose this is what you have to expect from having a prime location in the city.

The food was excellent. Breakfast has a choice of fruit, bread, cereal or cooked scottish breakfast. Everything was fresh. The restaurant staff were very friendly and helpfull. Dinner was also good but the only problem we had was that the menu for the second night was the same as the first, and it wasnt a big choice. But food quality was excellent. We decided to eat in the hotel bar on the 2nd night, The Caley, which claims to have 232 different kinds of whisky to try. Again the food was good.

The leisure facilities are good, but not great. The pool is pretty small, but was never busy when we were there. The gym is also small and a bit dated.

All in all, we had an excellent 2 nights in this 5* hotel.

We stayed at The Caledonian Hilton on the second and third nights of our three night break in Edinburgh.

We booked a two night special offer on the Hilton website which included dinner for the first night and breakfast for the first morning.

We received a friendly welcome at check-in and the lobby induced a feeling of grand nostalgia. There is a display cabinet near the elevator showing photographs of famous guests that have stayed in the hotel in the past including Laurel and Hardy!

The room was a big disappointment. It was one of the smallest rooms we have ever stayed in, with dirty, dusty surfaces in the bedroom. It was full of items of furniture which were far too big for a room of that size (please get rid of the clutter it is so claustrophobic!). The Playstation controller was caked in filth. However, the bathroom was clean and just as big as the room!

The bed was so uncomfortable that springs were digging into our backs and we slept for less than two hours on the first night. However, when complaining the next morning the staff were very concerned and in the evening we returned to find a brand new mattress had been placed on our bed which was extremely comfortable. A good hotel is one that acts quickly upon a guest's complaint and rectifies the problem. This is exactly what the Caledonian Hilton staff did and we were grateful for their kind care and attention.

The food and wine in the Chisolm's Restaurant was of a high standard and the staff friendly and professional.

Overall, the Caledonian Hilton offers good food and service throughout but the rooms need updating and should be maintained to a better standard. The smaller rooms should be relieved of some of the unecessary clutter so as not to be claustrophobic.

The standard of our room almost ruined our stay but the staff recovered the situation and as a result we would return to this hotel in the future.

I booked this 5 start hotel on 'Secret Hotels', part of lastminute.com. The room was dreadful, small, stained carpets, broken light-bulb, with a nasty view of the car park and the back of buildings, and not what I would expect from a 5 star hotel. We upgraded, adding an extra 25% to our already hefty hotel bill, and for the grand sum of £400(€600/$815) for 2 nights didn't even get breakfast included! A complete rip off.
However, the upgraded room was nice, and spacious, and the staff were pleasant and helpful, especially the door-man.

We stayed 3 nights at this hotel in order to do some touristy things in Edinburgh. Accomodation was good (we booked a suite), however the food was a real letdown. Buffet breakfast in a 5 star hotel has to be for the hotel's convenience not the guest's. The food was very pre-cooked and left for a long time on the servery - why do you have to make your own toast?
The one evening meal we tried in the same restaurant (not I will admit the hotel's gourmet restaurant - that was closed, it was Monday after all) was very poor quality.
We ate out for the rest of our stay and would not use this hotel again.

Stayed for two nights at the end of September on Hilton rewards and the hotel was very good. We arrived late and check in was easy, the hotel bar had a good atmosphere and the room was fine. The outside of the hotel and the inside public space felt very grand, with a large sweeping staircase and large corridors on the floors. It is nice to stay in a hotel like this given most of the ones I stay in are modern and pretty much the same inside. The breakfast was pretty good, with a large enough choice, particularly with the cooked breakfast.

The location of the hotel was also pretty good, being slap bang in the main shopping area of the town and close to plenty of bars and restaurants. This meant it was a bit of a hike up the hills to the tourist parts of the city but that was no bother for us. The hotel staff were also very friendly and happy to help which is what you would expect, but I don't always find this to be the case of course.

The only negative point was the bed which was a bit soft and creeky for me, but that is only a minor gripe and I would recommend this hotel to anyone who is staying in Edinburgh.

  • Liked — Friendly staff and a feeling of being in a grand hotel with a bit of history behind it.
  • Disliked — The soft and creeky beds!
