“Great history, Great view”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 22, 2012

We lucked out and had good weather. They were setting up the Christmas festival and no one thought the monument was open. 278 steps to the top and what a view!
The design allows you to see all the stone carving in detail which was interesting in comparison to other monuments.
We were the only two on the monument and I can understand other reviewers comments. If there had been anyone else there, the cramped landings and narrow stairs would have made it challenging.

“Lovely architecture...”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed November 16, 2012

The view was ok at the top, but not as good as from the castle nor from Arthurs seat.

I think the attendant downstairs let far too many people in at once... The walk to the top would not be so bad (287 steps) if you didn't have to negotiate round people coming in the opposite direction... One guy slipped and knocked me down a few stairs so wasn't too impressed for the rest of the day.

Get practicing at limbo if you're over 5'9" because the top is an awfully tight squeeze!

“impressive memorial”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed November 8, 2012

An amazing memorial, it was shut when we visited, but the work involved in building this must have been phonominal, was worth seeing even at ground level.

“Top of the world!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 6, 2012

The views from all 4 stages of the Scott Monument are spectacular in every direction, you just need to be prepared for the climb! This might be stating the obvious but it is not for those incapable of climbing a lot of steps, anyone with a fear of heights or anyone with claustrophia as the stairs in some places are pretty narrow. Just warning you now! It was really worth going right to the top, especially on a clear day as you can see for miles. There is a little exhibition that is almost like a shrine to Sir Walter Scott on the first level that explains a little bit about how the monument was constructed and there are some beautiful stained glass windows in there that are worth a look. Great value for £3.
