“Simply superb”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 14, 2013 via mobile

This is all you would want and more.

Fantastic food, great service and decent portions. Lots of choice including dishes that depict Scotland.

Truly lives up to its motto of "from nature to plate" - the scallops were the best I have ever tasted. This place is destined to go far. Enjoy.

“Excellent cooking, worth a detour, thats two Michelin stars from me!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 14, 2013

I keep going back because it keeps getting better!
I believe this chef serves "Excellent cooking, worth a detour" that is Michelin star speak for a two star place.
We were shown to the kitchen "Chefs table" for our pre lunch drink, and it is quite wonderful to watch a kitchen team under friendly Dominic Jack work its magic. You should ask for a quick downstairs visit.
The three course lunch is great value @ £26.50.
Joel will serve you wine well matched to each course and tell you about it for £22.50 each.
That saves a lot of reading and thought!
My crisp pork and black pudding starter was large and perfect.
My main of Cod (gently cooked in a water bath) served with a squid cannelloni was the best cod ever.
I had a small and delicate profiterole desert.
The bread basket is excellent as is service.
The table setting, plastic leaf menu and room may not be quite as smart as you expect, but the cooking and service are at the top level.

“This restaurant and chef are destined for greatness.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 11, 2013

Delightful from the moment we entered, pleasing ambience and exceptionally pleasant and knowledgeable staff at reception and the bar who explained everything in a most charming manner.

Possible the best meal we have ever experienced other than in Le Louis XV in Monaco but here it was a fraction of the price and a more relaxed establishment.

Dining at this level with this standard of food and service in the UK is hard to find and a real treasure for Scotland & Edinburgh.

This restaurant and chef are destined for greatness.

“Best Restaurant in Edinburgh”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 10, 2013

Service, food, ambience - all very special. Even better then the Kitchin in my opinion (although a close call). Three visits, never ever disappointed and will be going back for my fortieth birthday. I'd really rather not be going anywhere else...

“Surprisingly real, a triumph of substance over style, wonderful.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 9, 2013

Clever menu, nuanced staff, absolutely wonderful food, it was a magical meal, sublime wine selection.

It almost, but not quite, felt like a bargain, which takes some doing at about £220 for two, but they almost pulled it off. Another surprise were the other diners, nice not brash (we had previously dined at this location in the pre Castle Terrace days where the highlight of the dinner was a couple calling their babysitter & telling her to go home before their next hour/£20 kicked in – what can one say ????)
