“Raising the Bar for B&B's Everywhere!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 2, 2012

My husband and I stayed at The Guest Room for 3 nights at the end of April, and what a great choice that was! We really enjoyed how private, comfortable and tidy the accommodations were. We also thought that the location could hardly be beat; The Guest Room, with its own private entrance, is located on a wonderfully quiet street, yet it was just a short walk away from everything we had planned to visit.

Regarding the room itself, it was large, well appointed, clean, and the bed was very comfortable. The private bathroom was also a good size and very clean. The breakfasts were a real treat! We enjoyed breakfast in bed all three mornings, and indulged in fresh juice, yoghurt, scrumptious breads with a selection of spreads, and porridge with a selection of delicious fresh toppings.

All this wouldn't have been half as good as it was had it not been for Katrina and Fergus who were so welcoming and helpful. From their bright smiles, to their great advice and delicious goodies (shortbread and hot tea after a long day's walk), they were the most wonderful hosts. We really felt very well looked after.

Upon our return to Canada, we raved about The Guest Room to all of our friends and family, and we will be sure to try and stay there again, if are so lucky as to make another trip across the pond!

We stayed one evening with Katrina & Fergus and it may have been the best bed & breakfast experience we've had yet. We booked the room with its own entrance, but were consistently greeted warmly and enthusiastically when we returned after a long day of marching up and down those Edinburgh hills.

Though a short walk to the lively city centre and all the tourist attractions, our room felt like an oasis. It did take some effort to not just squirrel ourselves away in a cosy chair with a cup of tea & a book! We particularly appreciated the king-sized bed and the warm touches like a vase of freshly cut peonies and a selection of novels for those insomniacs amongst us.

It is exactly a place like this every traveller hopes awaits them at the end of a journey. We look forward to returning some day soon.

We chose The Guest Room as a stopover on our way to the Hebrides, staying both on the way there and back. This was the best choice we could have made! The pleasant welcome, the beautiful room and a relaxing atmosphere allowed us to recharge our batteries after a long travel. Everything was there that we would have hoped for: big comfortable beds, a very tasteful room decoration, a good selection of books, tea making facilities and a very clean and beautiful bathroom. We also got a cot provided for our toddler. The basement room also has its own entrance. When you come out of the door, you find yourself in this beautiful courtyard (patio) garden with potted plants and outdoor furniture. After a good night's sleep, the day couldn't start better than with the wonderful breakfast of warm porridge with brown sugar and fresh berries, freshly squeezed orange juice, warm croissants and jam, brought to the room on a huge tray! Katrina and Fergus were just great hosts and even helped us to find nice places to eat out in the evening, which were within walking distance. The station and the airport bus are also only 15 minutes walk away, which makes the location ideal. When we come back to Edinburgh the choice will be easy: we will be booking at The Guest Room.

We had a lovely 2-night stay in the courtyard room. Fergus and his mother-in-law gave us a very warm welcome and ensured we had everything we needed. The room was beautifully decorated and the bed was the biggest we had ever seen, and extremely comfortable as well. Both the bathroom and the room itself where clean as a whistle. A wonderful Breakfast was brought to the room every day, with even more choices than your average restaurant menu. The shortbread provided in the room is nothing short of divine and everything you could ever need on a weekend away is there in the room, from water bottles, to books, to leaflets of tourist attractions, to... You name it and Fergus and Katrina have supplied it. We also liked the location, which is very close to the city centre and Fergus' restaurant recommendations were very helpful too. If we ever come back to Edinburgh we will definitely stay here again. A very big thank you from Fien and Stefan from Belgium.

We stayed in the courtyard room for three nights for a conference in May, and thoroughly enjoyed it despite the rainy weather! Katrina and Fergus are fantastic hosts and the homemade shortcake is divine. We both enjoyed the breakfast – fresh fruits/berries and porridge – much healthier than the full Scottish offered in hotels! It is great to stay away from the touristy and noisy Royal Mile full of hen parties but still within walking distance of all attractions and some great little restaurants! It is also conveniently located for the airlink and the local buses to the suburbs. To me there was an added bonus: the ambiance of the New Town is just as described in some of Alexander McCall Smith’s novels – the Georgian houses, the small art galleries, the wine bars, even the no. 23 bus. I was itching to ask Fergus about the secret tunnels…. but I'll leave it till our next visit!

We spent a lovely weekend in Edinburgh and Katrina and Fergus were the most gracious and accommodating of hosts. We stayed in the lower ground room with en-suite bathroom which was very private and cosy. After a long day of walking around the city, we were delighted when a knock on the door at 5PM came with an offer of tea and Katrina's out-of-this-world brownies--dangerously good! I whole-heartedly recommend The Guest Room if you are looking for quiet and home-like accommodation in Edinburgh--the location is perfect, too. Thank you for making our weekend such a relaxing one, Katrina and Fergus! Kimberley & Mungo

Katrina and Fergus where fantastic during our 4 days stay, this this place was just the ticket from the moment we booked to our arrival and when we arrived what a warm welcome we recieved. Breakfast in our room every morning was great, fresh fruits, porridge, to highlight Saturday's Cooked breakfast Fergus Special Black Pudding was so tasty. It's location is perfect and so central to Edinburgh's City Centre everything is so close and at hand. Nice light, clean and airy room, home from home. Highly recommended and can't wait to go back. Hope to see you very soon, Thank you for making our 25th Anniversay FANTASTIC.
