“Stay Here!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 16, 2013

Lovely calm rooms, helpful and young interesting host, good location - on a quiet street but a short walk to restaurants, Royal Mile, other sites. Nice breakfast. If you like the B & B experience rather than a hotel, I would highly recommend this spot. Although I was with a couple on this trip, I would have felt fine staying here on my own in terms of the location and the whole experience. Nice touch was a fruit bowl in the breakfast area - which you could access any time so nice to have a piece of fruit at the end of the day.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at this lovely B & B, from the moment John greeted us at the door to the time we departed four days later. We had a quiet, spacious, immaculate room at the back, with high ceilings, inside shutters, a very comfortable double bed outfitted with top quality linens and pretty woolen throws. The ensuite, modern bathroom boasted a double shower, heated towel bars and organic toiletries. Face cloths were also provided when requested (with apologies that they weren't an exact match with the towels!).
John is very knowledgeable and articulate and pays great attention to detail, providing note paper, a mini library in the room, organic teas, coffee and snacks and even slippers in the wardrobe. He went out of his way to be helpful, providing advice on our travels, assisting with parking, calling taxis, mailing our postcards, providing an early breakfast when needed, and providing suggestions re restaurants. A sideboard in the main hall served as a repository for tourist pamphlets, notes, and business cards.
McCraes's is very well located, being just a few bus stops from the central attractions, and a short walk to very good restaurants.
Breakfasts were delicious, with an excellent variety of organic and local foods - the sweetened porridge was outstanding - never found this version anywhere else in Scotland!
The only suggestions I'd have for improvements would be to:(i) have better lighting beside the bed for reading in bed (ii) provide a folding luggage rack in the room for holding a suitcase.
We would definitely stay here again and highly recommend this B & B to other travelers.

Room Tip: The double room at the back is very quiet. (Perhaps they all are, as this is a quiet residential nei...

Thank you for such a great review Vera. I'm delighted you enjoyed your stay so much. It was a pleasure having you all here.

Thanks also for the suggestions. You are right about the bed-side lights in room 2; I have been meaning to upgrade them for some time and now I'll move this right to the top of my list of things to do. I do have a folding a luggage rack in each room but perhaps it had been folded and was out of obvious sight while you were staying. I'll make sure it's in plain view in future.

Thanks again for everything.

John

We stayed at McCrae's for three nights. It is located in a mostly residential neighborhood, making for quiet nights. Our room was clean, bright, and welcoming. There were interesting Edinburgh-related books in the room as well, which I read during my stay. The B&B is about a 15-minute walk from the train station, from which you can get pretty much anywhere in the city. And just 5-10 minutes away is Broughton Street, with lots of restaurants, pubs, and cute stores. Breakfast was fresh and delicious, and there was fruit available every morning (rare for the UK). John was very accommodating and helpful throughout our stay. If I visit Edinburgh again soon, I would try to stay here again.

Our stay at McCraes's could not have been better. The owner, John, was most accommodating. We had a very late arrival, yet he was up to greet us and show us our beautiful room. The double (one large twin and one double) was perfect for the two of us, but could have comfortably fit three. The bedding was the best we had on our entire European trip. The bathroom was clean and updated. Overall, we had a great experience and will be staying at McCraes's whenever we're in town.

We spent two night at McCraes in the family room. We were very impressed with the size of the bedroom and bathroom. The room was clean and comfortable. The breakfasts were excellent. John, the owner, and his three children were warm and friendly. We only met the children briefly but spent a good deal of time talking with John. He helped us navigate our way through the city, gave suggestions on places to see and was happy to answer all of our questions and special requests.
The location of this B&B was excellent! We were within easy walking distance of all the sites but far enough away that we had quiet nights for sleeping.
I would highly recommend McCraes as would my sons who gave it two thumbs up!

We had a wonderful stay. The location is great --- 20-30 minute walk to most of the major sights and close to many good pubs and restaurants. John was very friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful in providing advice and directions. Rooms were extremely clean with comfortable beds and ensuite bathrooms. Breakfasts were fantastic with many local organic products. Good value for money. We would definitely return.

Lush bedding and a great, renovated, bathroom. The double (that also had a single bed) was roomy and comfortable. The room looked out to the backyard, which was lovely. We walked from the rail station and found the location to be good -- between two active locales. John directed to the laundromat and served awesome breakfasts. My husband had his first haggis and loves it.
