5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 30, 2011 via mobile

From the moment you step in you know you are somewhere special. From the friendly staff, decor, the quality of the rooms, breakfast, you will not be disappointed. All in all, a beautiful hotel, and an experience that will not be forgotten quickly.

The concierge with the dreadlocks (I'm so sorry to forget your name) - thanks for being so great and attentive with my Mum. She loved every suggestion you gave her and your advice got the trip off to a good start.

We did the £200 a night package which included movies, alcohol free mini bar and breakfast. Room was outstanding, and bathroom lovely. We needed a lot of pillows as they were just too flimsy. It feels really pedantic to even mention it, but there you go.

The only drawback (and I see it also referenced below) was the breakfast team. They're slow and unapologetic for their mistakes. Even minor - just apologise and carry on. But the food was delicious and the buffet a real change with the italian additions.

This was very nearly a 5 star city experience...

This was our first stay at this central Edinburgh hotel & first impressions were that it was very trendy with great over the top decor.

Check in at reception was fast & efficient with our room being ready nice & early.

The room was fine, overlooking the Royal Mile, a bit small but had everything we needed. You also got free soft drinks/crisps in the mini-bar.

As was said earlier this room overlooked the Royal Mile and unfortunately this was the worst night's sleep we have ever had in a hotel. The room we had 438 was in the older part of the hotel where they still had the old-fashioned sash windows with shutters on them there was no form of secondary glazing on them. From 1.00am until just after 4.00am all you could hear was the fighting/shouting/chaos of the drunken masses walking along the Royal Mile outside. Then you got the re-cycling lorry followed by the road sweeper. We went home feeling shattered! Not very relaxing stay at all.

We did report this to reception when we checked out & they were very sympathetic & offered to give us a room upgrade the next time we stayed. Nice comments but didn't really stop us from thinking how there was no way we would want to stay there again. If this 5* hotel is to class itself as ‘one of the best in Edinburgh’ I suggest they invest in secondary glazing in the old part of the hotel or at least mention it when booking or checking in that the room is located within the old part and your sleep may be disturbed!!

On the positive side I have to say that this was one of the best hotel breakfasts I have had with great service & lovely fresh produce. Such a shame about the noisy bedroom though.

Last year we were left with the most amazing taste in our mouths, desperate for more. This time not so much, more like the chocolate you just didn't need, but ate anyway!

Last year we were "wow'd" beyond our greatest expectations, this year we were just another guest.

This is NOT a BAD REFLECTION ON THE HOTEL, just a feeling we got. Saying that, James and his team were on form as expected, champagne arranged for the room as requested etc. (£51 for Moet BTW, which I thought was quite reasonable) and little cakes with a card, although they seemed like an after thought as they would have been great with the champagne!!

The room was smaller than last years, although it too had a great view of Arthur's Seat and the Royal Mile. I WAS VERY ANNOYED to find that the room did not come with alcoholic beverages, and when queried I was told that only the "delux" rooms had this, I had been in contact with James (the manager) for several months planning this and was "ASSURED" one of the "better" rooms at the very least! Considering I booked last time through Lastminute.com and got a delux room at a fraction of the cost!!

The moral of the review would be, "sometimes it is just nice to have those memories, and maybe you shouldn't try and recreate them!"

Room Tip: Ask for a "front view" that way you will see the sights!!

Dear 'Kay-Partyof5',

Thank you very much for choosing to stay with us again at Hotel Missoni after your stay last year. I have spoken to the team and they all mentioned that it was great to see you both again!

Please accept my apologies that we were not able to upgrade you to one of our suites during your stay. Last year, after a small issue with your room, we had the availability to move you in to one of our suites on the 5th floor. I have spoken to my colleague, James, who informed you, prior to your arrival that we would do our utmost to allocate you the very best standard room available, which we were able to do. It would have been great to have provided you with an upgrade this time round but unfortunately the hotel was fully booked over that weekend.
I am sorry that you were not made aware on check in that standard rooms are not stocked with an alcoholic mini bar. This is something that we provide in our Superior rooms and our Suites as added value.

I appreciate your comments and you have made some useful suggestions, thank you. We would be delighted to welcome you back again so please do not hesitate to get in touch with myself or James directly and we would be more than happy to assist.

Kind Regards,

Julianne

The Missoni is a delight, right from when you are met by one of the outlandishly-clad doormen (Missoni fabric kilts). The decor is everything you would expect - I particularly loved my bathroom and the breakfast room, which is a riot of colour and patterns.

I also liked the idea of a free mini-bar and nespresso machine, they don't stock it with anything fancy, but it is nice to be able to have a drink in your room without feeling like you are being ripped off. The same goes for the provision of free wi-fi. The bathroom is also well stocked with nice toiletries.

The location is fantastic and you can daily access most of the things you would want to see in central Edinburgh by foot.

My one complaint is that the service at breakfast was dreadfully slow - it took almost 30minutes to get a coffee! And they didn't seem to be especially busy, so I dread to think what it is like if they are packed out.

Make sure you shop around for a good rate (have a look on trivago). I booked the day before I stayed and got a really good rate including breakfast which was way cheaper than the rates listed on the hotel website.

We loved this hotel and will never stay anywhere else when visiting Edinburgh.
It's definately worth splashing out on one of the 'Maggiore' rooms. The view from ours was amazing.

There are many words to describe this hotel...eclectic, modern chic, quirky, Vibrant etc. This is a surprisingly compact hotel with a lot going on in terms of modern design, patterns, bright colours and very fashionable high end features such as Bang & Olufsen TVs in the bedrooms, comfortable beds with top drawer linens. Not a sound to be heard from outside. The location is perfect right in the centre of the Old town too. Staff are very friendly and helpful. Free Internet and refreshments bar, plus a nespresso machine in the room is a very nice touch which partly justifies the relatively high room price. The only small negative thing I have to say is that the cocktails at the bar didn't quite live up to expectations. They are a bit on the expensive side which I don't mind paying as long as you get the quality you pay for, but at £19 for a jug (half full) of one of their signatue cocktails looked like, and tasted like Sour Barocca. However for the location and accommodation we would definitely return.
