“a good start in a new city”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 6, 2012

one feels welcome, and that's a good start when you come to a city you've never visited before. a short email contact with our host Heather a few days before had already given a good feel about this place and these people. we were not disappointed! excellent location, no streetnoise, close to royal terrace, and calton hill with splendid view over the city. as a matter of fact, the b&b is not far from waverley station, the city, the castle, etc. we even walked to the national gallery of modern art in dean village... we can only confirm everything that was said here by reviewer AussieK6. thanks again heather and ian, hope to see you again some day.

My first trip to Edinburgh I thought I was luky to get a room in what seemed to be a sold out city! Upon arrival it was not just luck but excellent fortune to be staying at The Hedges. A 15 minute walk from Edinburgh Waverly, with straightforward directions to follow, I easily found the B&B, and Heather was warm and welcoming at the door, giving me the run down of the place as well as showing me around the map of the city so I could feel comfortable straight away. The room was beautiful, living up to its description. The bed was super comfy, the ensuit immaculate and the water pressure and temperature fantastic! So much better than my shower at home! There was tea/coffee/chocolate facilities in the room plus chocolates on the bedside, a hair dryer and plenty of sockets for plugging in your phone etc., to charge. The artwork in the room was of old Edinburgh so placing you in the history of the city, and all the decoration was stylish and sophisticated. The view from my room was across to the Royal Terrace and whilst it is centrally located, had very little street noise, yet buses a plenty onthe doorstep. Heather offered to lend umbrellas etc., and asked me to ask her for anything I may have forgotten as she could most probably lend it or point me in the right direction to get it, which I thought was very thoughful as sometimes there are little things like converter plugs that are needed. And the breakfast...wow! Very generous and a great choice! And fresh parsley picked from the garden - it is these lovely touches that make the stay here that much more enjoyable. As a single female traveller in a not yet explored city, I felt safe and welcomed at The Hedges and would highly recommend a stay there. Both Heather and her husband were chatty and interested in where you have been and what you would like to do, promoting Edinburgh and greater Scotland as a tourist destination in a friendly manner, without being prying or making you feel like an annoyance - a lovely balance. I hope to stay with them again in the spring when my Mum visits me from Australia!

What a lovely place to stay. Heather made us feel so welcome and we felt so relaxed. The room was furnished beautifully and the bed really comfortable. Breakfasts were truly delicious and the choice, WOW, did not even think about having another meal until evening. From The Hedges it is only about 10 minute walk to the Royal Mile and Princess Street, lots of restaurants to choose from and lively bars. Would most definitely recommend The Hedges Guest House to anyone considering going to Edinburgh. Heather was also very helpful as I left a piece of clothing and is going to mail it to me, cheers Heather!

We stayed here in January, 2012, and could not have received a warmer welcome. The rooms are very comfortable which lots of 'weekend break' essentials you can borrow, such as raincoats and umbrellas (useful for the inclement weather!). Heather and Ian are lovely, and full of local tips. And the breakfasts are wow! We left every morning fully fuelled for the long walks up and down Edinburgh. Thank you, and we will definitely be back!

Congratulations to Heather and Ian. The Hedges is an amazing B&B in a perfect position. 10 minutes walk away from the hubbub of Princes Street. And what makes the Hedges a real gem is that it is quite and restful in the middle of the city. The quality of Heather's breakfast is second to none! We ate breakfast at 0830 every morning, and didn't feel hungry enough for a proper meal until at least 6pm every night! So we saved a fortune in snacks and lunches out while we were there! Heather was very helpful with regards to local knowledge especially with what buses to get, and she always made the sure we knew which side of the road we needed to be on to get the bus in the right direction. The room we stayed in was spacious and clean. Great shower. Make sure you have the Kippers for breakfast a choice you won't regret. Will stay again without hesitation.

We had a wonderful time staying at Hedges. The guesthouse has only three rooms, which means that its wonderful owner, Heather, is able to provide you with great service and an exceptional experience. The room was very nicely decorated, and we were spoilt with all sorts of treats. Breakfast was delicious too. The Hedges is located about 10 minutes walk from Princes Street and 15 minutes walk from the Royal Mile, which makes it very central - we walked everywhere. If you enjoy guesthouses, with their quirks and pleasantries, then we highly recommend the Hedges.
