Description: Located across the road from Edinburgh University in Midlothian, 56 North is a vibrant bar and restaurant that is popular with students, lecturers and locals alike. The 56 North bar is filled with comfy booths and has a cosy home-away-from home vibe. 56 North restaurant itself is decorated with granite, green slate and light Scandinavian wood it's won a slate of style awards. The modern British cuisine is created from local, fresh, organic ingredients and favourite dishes include the Scottish salmon fillet served with new potatoes, asparagus, and lime and coriander butter; the gammon steak and fries with mushy peas, fries and a fried egg; and the delicious homemade Mars Bar cheesecake. During the day, 56 North is a quiet caf, perfect for families and chatty lunches. In the evening, the crowd's volume soars and it's revealed as a player on the Old Town bar scene.

“Excelent !!!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 19, 2013

Thank you VERY MUCH !!!
The service in this place is so amazing thant i don't even have enough words to describe it. Staff is extra attentive and helpful , food and drink come on time and you are treated like a royalty. Once we went out to have a cigarette , the waiter brought an ash tray within the minute we left. Not every five star hotel has such a great service.
We didn't eat a lot , we just had a snack with wine , but the way it was placed on a plate and it's taste was awesome ! Everything was fresh and of a very good quality , we really appreciate that.
Me and my friends really enjoyed our time there , looking forward to come back :)

“Different from typical places”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 13, 2013

It's a bar and a very cosy and modern one!
Great food, especially burgers and salads. Also good cocktails and not very expensive, actually.

Perfect for a quick break or lunch during the day, near the University and a good place for a drink after study/work! At night it turns out a cool bar/restaurant!

Tables also outside and the barman is very handsome!

“Over-rated rude manager expensive for cheap food!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed August 11, 2013

Recently visited here for a bit of a catch up with old friends and was really disappointed. Food was below average, cheap and over cooked. I'm never one to complain about music but could barely hold a conversation because the music was so loud and this was at 8pm! Steak was very fatty and under cooked. Staff were rude when I sent it back. I could over hear them talking about myself and my friends as one of my friends had asked for a new napkin as there was a hair in her folded napkin. Drinks are also very expensive. Will not be re-visiting.

“Never again! Worst restaurabts in Edinburgh!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed August 6, 2013

Apart from a cheap cut of steak with blood and grease dripping out of it which was placed on top of over cooked greasy chips (£18.50) not to mention the still partly frozen cheesecake the owner (well so he says) was very aggressive when we complained. He wasn't working that night but seemed to be partying with his friends. Us three women were taken aback by the manor in which he choose to talk to us. He was extremely rude and aggressive. I work in customer service the last 9 years and I have never in my life dealt with a more unprofessional, bad mannered person.

56North, Manager at 56 North, responded to this review, August 7, 2013
We at 56 North very rarely reply to online reviews due to the fact we think sites like this are very helpful for the public and should be left alone to compile reviews as a fair reflection of the bussiness. In this case the review needs a balanced reply.

The guests in questions booked a table and were informed before they came for dinner they could not use a "High Life card" during the Fringe this is clearly displayed on our website next to our menus and also over the phone. However since the guests wanted a table we offered to honour the booking or cancel it as they wished but without the use of the card. The guests decided to come for dinner which was agreed and booked. This was all dome prior to them coming.

The guest had dinner and were repeatly checked back on while everything was completly fine and no drink or food complaints at all to any memeber of staff over 3hrs. Around 11:30pm the guests then asked for a bill trying to use the "High Life Card" they were politly informed that they couldn't use it as they had been told on the phone prior to coming. At this stage the guests refused to pay the bill asking to see the manager denying that they had been told this prior to booking and hadn't received a phone call even though it was noted againts the booking.

The staff were polite but firm saying they had been informed clearly and decided to come for dinner so knew the situation. Again the guest refused to settle the bill as it was. At this stage the manager showed them the phone log that they had been called on with one of the guests number in it. Again the guest refused to accept this saying there should be printed terms & conditions (which there are online and in the bar).

As an act of decency and in no way need as we had done nothing wrong we offered them 3 free drinks which they refussed.

We at 56 North maintain a high level of service through out the year and are especially busy during the Fringe festival. While everything was clearly explained to the guests the simply did not want to pay for it for the simple reason they wanted a deal. If the guests had a complaint at any stage about food & drinks over dinner it would have been dealt with without a problem but they had no complaints other than the fact they had to pay the bill. We feel it is important that other users are aware of this guest using this site for an agenda rather than an honest review.

Thanks and keep up the good work Trip Advisor.
