“Good hotel, bad service”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed November 28, 2010

This is a lovely hotel and the room has great facilities. Its also in a good location and although parking is an issue you can park free at the weekend in many street around the meadows with a 10 minute walk. The main downside to our stay was the unfriendly service and staff. No offer to carry our bags to the room or offer of a lift, no answer when phoning reception and blatantly rude night porter. We won't be back which is a shame as I could have stayed in that room forever!

Had an amazing stay at this hotel. couldn't fault anything. The staff were great from start to finish. The front desk staff helped us out so much with where to go and eat and things to do during the day.

Would definatley recommend

Our room was located just steps down the hall from several bags of garbage that stayed there throughout our two day stay, smelling increasingly aromatic of rotting food, something like the dumpster in the alley behind a restaurant after a long, hot weekend. It was hot in the room and the installation of the window was so poorly done that it would not open even though it was meant to do so on the first floor. The air conditioning was not working and the night manager refused to call maintenance in until a serious conversation was held with him. The maintenance man found that the filter on the supply air in our room was absolutely clogged with dust and dirt. When he changed it out, we finally had cool air, about midnight.

As a HdV and Malmaison regular you become accustomed to great service, aesthetically pleasing surroundings and sensational food and wine.
i genuinely love this brand of hotels and write this review feeling that HdV could have done more to make me feel like i'd returned home.

We had foregone our plans to spend the night in another hotel to stay at HdV but oddly, we were met with with a somewhat frosty reception as we entered the foyer to announce our intentions to stay with this wonderful hotel chain.
I opted for a Sunday night stay that offered If you spend £75 or more in the bistro you'll get a room for a further £45. (although somewhat confusingly the website states that the rooms at Edinburgh were £35) normally if a rate is advertised on the website the hotel staff usually honour it, where as i was met with a "well, the rate changed so you'll have to live with it" approach. (not exactly living up to HdV's exemplary reputation i think you'll agree)

The parking offered by the hotel is also an issue, as £12 for 12 hours (including the HdV discount) is too expensive for a Sunday night.
It is also a nightmare to find the car park (for a non local) walking from the car to the Hotel front door took a clear 10 minutes (in traditional Scottish wind and rain). I feel this is simply too far!

Great food and wine is HdV's Raison d'être...and here i have no room for complaint, as the food and wine were a revelation, the property is indeed charming, the whisky den is deep and glorious, as is the outdoor cigar snug. but if only the staff lived up to the investment that has clearly been made at this HdV.

So come on HdV Edinburgh, I think you should recognise frequent customers to the chain, be more flexible with your rates and most importantly of all work on that warm welcome that i frequently enjoy at other HdV's around the U.K.

This hotel is a bit off centre and if you come by car I have no idea where you would park - it's a £4 taxi from the station and £15 taxi from the airport.

The hotel needs to appreciate that if you have arrived by plane at midday you may need somewhere to change, and as rooms were not available until 3pm it was a problem for us - maybe our arrival would have seemed better if the receptionist had smiled!

Nice room on the top floor - but no lift.

The hotel layout is as quirky as most other Hotel du Vins - but the bar, on a mezzanine floor above the restaurant doesn't work very well - and the staff seem to spend a lot of their time on the stairs, going to and fro'.

Nice restaurant - I we didn't think the menu was a good du Vin presentation - maybe it was the Scottish influence? The restaurant Vittorias on The Bridge nearby is quite good.

Its a bit of a hike to the Castle and the Royal Mile and whilst the hotel can get you a taxi quickly, hailing one in the street is a bit of a problem. If you get on a bus the driver/conductor are missing social skills and you need the right change - they tell you this after you have put the money in the machine!

I suspect Edinburgh is getting blasse about their significant industry - tourism - and take it for granted. Adding value to a visitors experience is not a priority.

Hotel du Vin need to make sure that they don't slip into the same groove.

Had to stay an extra night in Edinburgh for business at short notice.

The experience was excellent. Room, service, food and wine were all excellent.

Only downside was the room being so close to the road. Lots of shouting and sirens outside but I think the students were enjoying themselves :)

We looked at your normal chain hotels in Edinburgh and they all seemed a lot more than we expected. This made us look around and for just a few pounds more you can stay in this wonderfully stylish hotel.

Very chic without being pretentious the room was very comfortable with all mod cons and the most fantastic shower.

Staff were really friendly and helpful.

We didn't use the facilities as we were just using it as a base but what a very pleasant and enjoyable base it was just a 5 minute walk from the Royal Mile.
