My partner and I visited Edinburgh over the Easter Long weekend and stayed at HDV for three nights. My partner being Parisian and myself a New Yorker, we are highly critical when it comes to accommodations, food and wine. That said, we were very impressed with the Veuve Clicquot suite (on the top floor of the old building). Suite highlights for us:
1. Ruinart in the minibar (Rose and Blanc de Blanc)
2. Nespresso machine
3. Big, comfy king bed
4. Large bath tub for two
5. En suite with heated floors
6. Charming architecture (black wooden ceiling beams, sloped ceiling, window seat where the bath tub was located)
Because we are foodies, we had made our dinner reservations at other EDN locales, but we managed to have two breakfasts and pre-dinner snacks at the hotel. The bfast buffet was more than adequate and the hot menu was very filling with waffles, french toast, porridge and 3-egg omelets. The bar, where we took snacks, had a limited menu but you could make special requests which the barmen would honor - although I was confused as to why a bar menu would not have fries on the menu anyway. The Eggs Benedict fom the bar menu had the best hollandaise sauce I've tasted in the 8 months I've lived in the UK so far. My partner enjoyed the Duck Rillete.
But I have to say that the most important (and best service) we received from HDV was those actions they took above and beyond the standard high quality service they seem to provide. For one instance, they gave us free tickets to the Toulouse v Edinburgh rugby match. Being American, rugby is lost on me, but my partner was over the moon because we were attending the European Cup quarterfinals. The second instance where HDV went above and beyond occurred after our checkout. I ended up leaving two dinner dresses in the suite closet (one dress costing more than 3-nights at HDV) and I began to freak out on the train back to London when I realized what I'd done. I called HDV and they simply packaged the dresses and sent them to my London flat, no problem.
All in all, HDV was a lovely 'homebase' for taking in the sites in and around EDN.
The Veuve Clicquot is quite charming. I'd stay again and request the same room.
