“A nice stay in Edinburgh”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 25, 2010

...as we travel a lot, we see quite a few b n b's around the UK. This one belongs to the ones we like, the owner is very friendly, up for a chat, flexible and cooks a brilliant breakfast. The rooms are nice, clean, quiet and all in a different style. The B n B is close to the city centre and has its own parking. Only for us it wasn't possible as we have a van. But even parking on the street is not a problem.

We enjoyed every stay and can recommend this place to all of you who would like to visit Edinburgh.

Happy travels!

Fantastic value and great place to stay. Very comfortable, clean rooms. Good selection for breakfast and everything freshly cooked. Owners couldn't have been more friendly and helpful. Easy access to city centre both by walking and bus. Will definitely stay then again.

Stayed at St. Conan's for two nights in May. Three of us stayed in the family en-suite room. The bathroom has washcloths, which is uncommon in the UK. Our hosts, the Bryces, were very generous, only charging us for three occupants when the room has four beds. The home is immaculate, the beds comfortable, and the host (Jim) friendly and accommodating. Jim even found British (rather than Scottish) pounds for our change since he knew we were headed back to England after our stay. The breakfast was the best we had in two weeks of moderately- priced B&B's across the UK. Included all the basics of the English breakfast plus the option of some Scottish items. All freshly made and delicious. A bit of a walk from midtown Edinburgh, but very doable ... and a straight shot. Cab fare from the center of town was not too high, either. If you walk into Edinburgh from St. Conan's, you will pass many ATMs, small grocery stores, sandwich shops before hitting Royal Mile. The ONLY down side ... if you're driving, the parking is a bit hard to get into, but it is available, it is off street, and you can do it (even if you're not used to British driving/cars). Don't be afraid to circle the block for a better angle at the drive.

  • Liked — The breakfast.
  • Disliked — The entry to the parking lot.

We chose St Conan for a two-night-stay this year as we had tickets for the TATTOO in Edinburgh. I have to mention that even the e-mail contact during the booking procedure was very kind and friendly and in a very helpful manner. We travelled with our 5 year old son and without problems we were able to get a family room at St Conans with enough space and beds of normal size for all of us. Also the price was very fair and in this way differed a lot from what other Guest Houses in Edinburgh offered.
Although the bathroom was really tiny it was sufficient and it was clean. The window was directed to the front of the building and the street but there were no disturbing noises. Maybe that was because the window was on ground / garden level.
As we did not pick the warmest days in August we were also pleased to notice that the central heating worked and heated the room quickly. Of course there were tea cooking facilities.
The breakfast room was nice and tidy and the breakfast was very good. Many kinds of cereals, yogurt, fruits, shortbread and of course a full size cooked breakfast left nothing to ask for. The hosts were so friendly and Jim was so helpful in whatever matter we needed his support. This is really a place to visit again and - be sure - I have seen about 100 Guest Houses all over Scotland and in Edinburgh.

  • Liked — The friendly atmosphere and warm welcome
  • Disliked — That we couldn´t stay longer

St Conan’s Guest House is in the Newington area, just 25-30 min walk to Princes Street and only 10 min by bus.
The bus stop is located just outside the house and there’s also a night bus service.

The Guest House is run by a couple. The host was very kind and friendly.

We stayed in a double room, with nice colours, tea-coffee making facilities and a private bathroom with complimentary toiletries (soap, bath foam, shampoo, shower cup).
The room and bathroom were cleaned thoroughly every day and we got fresh towels every 2 days.

The price of the room was 55GBP/double room/night in June2008, which was excellent value for money in our opinion.

Breakfast was included in the price: Coffee or tea was served along with orange juice. Porridge, eggs, bacon, sausages, potato scone, tomato, mushrooms, toast were cooked to order and there was a wide choice of cereal, cheese, butter and marmelade. Croissants and shortbread were offered as well.

Overall we’ve had no complaints and would definitely choose St Connans again for our next visit.
