This hotel used to be a big department store - now converted into a "trendy" hotel. The design is on the minimalist side, to my taste a bit short of comfort...The location is very good, just 10 mins walk to the castle (up a steep hill) and 5 from the grassmarket. The Stac Poly restaurant is only 2 mins away for the best of scottish contemporary food, a plus, and the Usher hall 3 mins away if you are attending a concert.
Rooms are variable, most are long and narrow, but fine, beds very very comfy with down quilts. Top floor is best for romantic views of the castle. Niggles: the shower controls are incomprehensible, even if you have a room where the mixer fascia is intact, and the glass curtain is immovable, so you are likely to be doused in freezing water before you sort the temperature out (that said there is good pressure and plenty of hot water when you do get it right) and Radio 4 is never available despite the printed card - tough if you are addicted to "today" in the mornings like me.
Breakfast is fairly uninspiring except the yummy spiced stewed apricots, though they are scrupulous about checking temperature on the cooked stuff - bacon, scrambled egg, mushroom, tomato etc. buffet style. Can't fault it but pretty "so what" if you know what I mean.
The Monbodo bar describes itself as "new york style" - couldn't say as I've never been to NY, but the staff are super friendly and there is a vast variety of cocktails etc. Pricey though, you will find better value a few minutes walk away in any direction. There are lots of bars and eateries in convenient walking distance - Japanese, Chinese, Thai, Belgian, French, Scots, Seafood etc.
I stay at this place pretty often for work, what can I say - I have a choice, but I come back here! excellent location but a little tired in presentation (though it sells itself on trendy - a different poem above reception every time you stay). Staff are generally great apart from reception, who are the slowest known to man (but still friendly).
