Was a bit apprehensive given some of the reviews. However, your view of the hotel will depend on what you want from it. If you go there expecting luxury and to spend a lot of time in your room, then this is not the place for you. If, like me, you just wanted a roof, bed and shower, then this is more than sufficient. The room was fine and clean, beds were very comfortable, bathroom was clean. Shower very powerful but can be very hot unless you mess around with the taps. Breakfast was fine, a good hearty fry each morning. Staff were friendly whenever we dealt with them.
The decor will not be to everyone's taste and the bedroom door colours were awful, but that's not what we went for.
Well worth a stay if you are not very fussy.

We stayed at the Point in October and could not have been more disappointed, especially for the price paid. The hotel itself feels like a badly reworked office building. The lobby is cold, dreary, and cheerless. The paint job throughout the hotel is terrible, and the colors are garish. The rooms are narrow and unattractive. Upon booking our rooms, we were told that free parking was available. When we arrived and registered, however, the desk clerk informed us that we could park our van at a public lot nearby, and that the best they could offer us was a 20% discount. We were also told that breakfast was included with our rooms, but when we checked out we noted an exorbitant charge for the meal. We brought the matter to the clerk's attention, who gave us a disgusted look, tore up the bill, and printed a new one with the charge removed. In brief, our stay at the Point was the one nightmare in what otherwise was a dream of a vacation. We will stick to b&bs on future visits to your beautiful country.

This place was worse than the lowest rating on this site. I would have rather slept in a tent and I am NOT kidding. We were on a group tour and it was one nightmare after another. Filthy smelly rooms, no bedspreads or blankets, pychodelic colors that made you feel you were in a drug film, bad service, keys did not work in the doors of for many of us on the floor, many broken things in our room, rude staff, absolutely horrible food, only two at a time could go up in the elevator as it kept buzzing. We were embarrassed to be there and told our tour director so in no uncertain terms. We were horrified at the conditions. Never, ever, ever, ever stay there. If you read something good about the Point on this site you can rest assured that the staff at the Point wrote it. It's a dive and our tour company no longer uses it.

We stayed at The Point on the first weekend after New Year, so the hotel was quiet. We were given (it's always worth asking!) a free upgrade to a room with a castle view, which was appreciated. Our contact with the staff was good: they were friendly and helpful, and room service was quick.

The hotel has an excellent location for exploring central Edinburgh, and although Friday and Saturday nights can be a bit noisy nearby, it's unlikely to be a problem.

Our room was fairly "minimalist" but not austere and had everything required. The TV/radio options were very limited (but then you don't come to Edinburgh to watch telly...) . With one or two minor exceptions, the room was in good condition too. The decor mightn't please everyone but is more interesting than the average hotel.

The bed was especially good (large and comfortable) and the bathroom was fine, although some people seem to have found the showers too powerful (they are very powerful!). Soaps and shampoo were provided.

The hotel's restaurant and bar looked good but we didn't put them to the test on this visit.

Overall, it was an interesting and pleasant place to stay, and very good value (£55/room), even for that time of year.

Stayed at the Point for New Years (30th Dec-03 Jan 05) with my boyfriend, what a let down. The Reception area and bar was designed so nice we thought our room (exec. double) had to be just as nice...how wrong were we!! The room had a very cold feeling to it horrible cheap blue carpet, white wall with a slap of yellow and blue, no widescreen tv like we were told we would have! only 4 channels no movies ect. No room service at wk ends, shower that was so powerfull it was filling the bath up with it and was very painfull. Old dated tiles in the bathroom. Could not fault the views we had of the castle just a shame about the hotel!! From the website you would think this hotel is amazing we can asure you it is not!! would have prefered to stay at a travel inn!!
