We stayed for nights at The Point in late October 2007. Our room was clean and spacious with lounge area that could be seperated from the rest of the room with a large sliding panel. Our view of Edinburgh Castle was fabulous. The window spanned the width of the room and directly faced the beautiful castle which looked even more spectacular when floodlit at night. My partner requsted a suprise bouquet and bottle of champers for our arrival which was brilliant, flowers fantastic quality, lasted nearly 2 weeks!

Bed comfortable and room tastefully decorated. Bathroom slightly more dated than the rest of the room and slightly shabby but did not detract from our general feelings about the room.

We ate breakfast in the hotel everyday and found a large variety of buffet food with supplementary free options such as haggis, poached eggs and black pudding. All very pleasing!

We also ate in the restaurant on one evening and the food was reasonably priced and delicious. We also frequented the excellent cocktail bar in the hotel which was funky and fabulous. The cocktails were second to none!

The corridors were different, long and grey with the odd neon lights which were a bit trippy particularly after some of the aforementioned cocktails, we quite enjoyed them although they did betray the buildings original function as a department store.

We loved it in the hotel and would happily return. Spectacular food, great service, lovely rooms.

  • Liked — The view from the window and the fab locatin, food and cocktails.
  • Disliked — The shabby bathroom but it wasn't terrible!

We were struggling to find a reasonably priced hotel for a one night stay for the Edinburgh Fringe in August. Happened upon the Mercure on internet & price was really competitive compared to others. Hotel is short walk from Waverley Station and ideally located for Grassmarket & Royal Mile. Room was really spacious, comfortable and clean. Breakfast good and all staff really friendly & helpful.

I was disappointed to find that on a quiet Thursday our room was not immediately ready at the designated check in time of 2pm. However after a brief wait we were given a key to our room, 1..something on the 1st floor. After over hearing the receptionists chatter behind the desk we had originally been allocated 6...something making me think that if our original room had been ready we would heve been situaled on the 6th floor with great views of the castle, as opposed to the view of the sex shop across the street and excessively loud street noise below!

However the room itself was nice and neat, kept simple in neutral colours with attractive furnishings. The bathroom, however was awful. Tatty, random hairs and to top it off there was an already used bar of soap left on the shower. Nice! Why do some hotels pull out all the stops with nice bedrooms and forget about the bathrooms!

Dinner in their restaurant was wonderful. Exeptionally reasonable and totally delicious. A great selection of wines made the evening. The adjoining bar was very pleasant too.

However after a lovely, and vino fuelled evening we did not appreciate being woken up by the housekeeper just after 8am especially as we were departing and therefore not needing our room serviced!

I cannot stress how lovely all the staff were. I am a hotelier myself and understand how difficult the job can be. This review is not meant to be totally negative because I would go back. I just felt some things were worth a mention. As I think they are things that could be easily corrected.

Public areas are fantastic and well maintained and again the staff were fantastic. Your almost there Mercure Point!

It was the edinburgh tattoo and festival and been looking forward to visiting edinburgh for years.
Hotel staff very helpful
1st Room on first night - wrong I had booked a view of edinburgh castle to watch the tattoo fireworks - so moved room to get view
2nd room disgusting filthy bathroom, mould growing all round shower and bath edge plus chip in bath.
3rd room - was upgraded to a Junior Suite, but hotel services manager had not checked it out after my complaints and once again mould around the shower, no hairdryer and no spoons to make drinks with.
When checking out I confirmed staff were good but rooms were disgusting and after my complaints I would have thought someone would have personally checked the 3rd room to ensure it was right.
Was given £20 off bill which I thought was an insult and would not recommend the hotel and would never go back again or use that group again.

  • Liked — close proximity to edinburgh castle
