We have just returned form a weekend stay at this hotel (this is my second stay with this hotel), we stayed in a superior room which was absolutely fantastic, it had a dressing area behind the bed and a walk in wet room, breakfast was very good, hotel location is good only draw back is it is near some lap dancing clubs. I would defiantly recommend this hotel to anyone.

I have also enjoyed food in the restaurant on pervious trips to Edinburgh.

I visited the Point Hotel from the 29th December to 2nd Jan for a New year trip to Edinburgh. The hotel itself is fairly recently renovated - pleasant reception area, restaurant and bar and somewhat dim and cavernous lobbies on each floor (the building used to be a department store so has a strange layout in places). The standard of the renovation was fair but a lot of the finishes were a bit slapdash and could have been done better. The hotel is ideally situated for the castle and city centre.

We were initially allocated room 434 at the back of the hotel - unfortunately this room was effectively built round a stairwell which meant it was "stretched" and a bit dull. However we were moved the next day to 424 which was pleasant, bright and had a great view of the castle. There was a problem with a bath tap but this was quickly fixed after it was reported.

Unfortunately at this point the problems started. From the 30th to the 2nd Jan there was no running water available (hot or cold) for around 4 hours each day - no toilets, no showers. This happened without warning on each of the days...and it was particularly annoying when the water went off at about 4pm on New Years Eve, leaving no possibility of showering to go out to New Year events.

Initially the management said this was due to a problem with water pumps in the hotel (although they have now informed us there was a problem with the mains water supply).

Obviously this problem was a big dampener on the whole New Year trip for us. Although the cause of the problem was itself outwith the hotel's control, there was no backup plan and there was a lack of information from management (apart from an apology note on New Years day)

So that was the big negative. On the positive side the staff were extremely helpful and friendly especially when under pressure. the management have been in touch regarding possible insurance claims.

The Point hotel is boutique on a budget - perhaps trying a bit too hard - but with great staff. It is just a pity that the hotel itself does not live up to the standards its staff set

A great hotel in a great location. Visitors here will not be disappointed! The room was a great size, with a HUGE comfortable bed, a nice leather sofa and a flat screen tv. Breakfast was included in the price, and there was lots to choose from, including cereal, fruit and a full fry up to get you geared up for the day! There is a lovely bar incorporated into the hotel, but prices were a bit expensive. The hotel is ideally located for the main visitor attractions. Overall, a great stay at a great hotel. If visiting Edinburgh again, we would definitley use this hotel again!

I spent 2 nights in this unusual but stylish hotel. The decor is 'funky', and my castle view suite was just that - the view was stunning, day and night. The room was large, and and comfortable without quite being deluxe. Breakfast was included, and was filling, though not adventurous.

Free wireless broadband is provided in the lobby and the adjacent bar, which was a plus. The location is ideal if you are going to the Edinburgh Conference Centre, which is only about 5 minutes easy walk away. I'd definitely stay here again

I stayed at the Point Hotel over New Year's, and have never been so disgusted as to the quality of rooms and the service in any of the many hotels I have stayed in throughout the world. Dirty cups were left in the room, towels were not replaced, and the water didn't work for most of the three night stay. When I complained to the hotel management at the time, we received extremely rude treatment and absolutely no solutions. The halls look like something from a dodgy 1970s porn film, and the rooms aren't much better, with extremely low lighting and prison grey walls. Promises to bring new lamps and for the water to be back on were made regularly, but never carried through. An attempt to contact the hotel management resulted in a similarly unsatisfying result, with the General Manager stating that the rude behaviour of the manager at the time was due to a 'lack of understanding from some of the guests'. All in all, I would pay not to stay here in the future. Be warned - go elsewhere.

Management response from Neil_Ellis, General Manager
(Management representative)
Jan 11, 2008
To all readers,

Here is a copy of the response letter sent by myself to these guests shortly after their stay.

To have guests shouting at our staff is unpleasant and I feel we have done everything we could have, in the circumstances, not wishing to say much more but It is a shame that there is not a guestadvisor.com!

8th January 2008

Dear XXXXXXXXXX,

Many thanks indeed for your letter which I received yesterday and I am writing to reiterate my apologies for the inconvenience caused by the disruption of the water supply during you recent stay at the Point Hotel.

I would also like to update you on the action that we have taken to locate the source of the problem in order for us to begin taking steps to have you compensated.

Following Contractor inspection, and not as we first thought, it was found that the water pump and all other related equipment maintained by the Point Hotel was not the cause of the disruption. This equipment was, and remains, fully functional.
Therefore, we have reported the issue to Business Stream, our water retailer, who have in turn been in touch with the utility company Scottish Water to investigate the matter further.

Our insurance company has also been contacted as a matter of course and they too are waiting for the outcome of the enquiry.

On the other comments raised in your letter regarding your room not being ready on arrival, my team remember your arrival and that you were into the room very shortly after your arrival. The 30th of December was nearly a complete departure and arrival day for the Hotel and as such is virtually impossible to have all rooms ready for 2pm. Apologies for the short delay you experienced.

The lighting in the room is moody and is designed as such, but thank you for your comments which have been noted for the next round of refurbishment. Should guests require extra lighting in their room we can provide standing lamps.

I have passed on your comments to the Housekeeping Team regarding the towel & cups and they pass on their apologies. As the room was checked by a Supervisor, they cannot understand how they were missed.

The last point I would like to comment on is your mention of staff training. We pride ourselves on our levels of customer care and all of our comment cards from guests reflect this. On this occasion however with the levels of complaints that we were receiving on the evening that perhaps the stress of the situation and the lack of understanding from some of our guests, caused the relevant Manager to not act as calmly as always. I have spoken to him and he apologises.

Please be assured that the comfort of our customers remains our top priority, and that we are committed to identifying why this occurred during your stay.

I will be in touch soon with further information when Scottish Water have completed their investigations to which they have 10 working days, and in the meantime please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any queries.

I hope that you enjoyed the remainder of your stay with us and thank you for taking the time to write to me in order that we may shed some light onto the situation.
