“Unexpected contrasts”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 22, 2013

When we pulled up, we were a bit scared when we went in as we turned up scruffy and travel worn. The welcome however was down to earth accepting and more than we could have asked for. Brilliant host, stunning building, we have now been spoiled with this tremendous place and now with this to compare to we are never 'slumming it' in a Travelodge again!

The breakfast was AMAZING the best black pudding and haggis I think I have possibly ever had. The bed comfortable, clean and smelling fresh. Bathroom was immaculate and full of well thought out touches which made the whole experience more special.

I can't rate this hotel highly enough.

We stayed for a long weekend and had a fantastic stay at 23 Mayfield. Clean, comfortable and amazing breakfasts. As with many B&Bs in Edinburgh it is a fairly long walk, or short bus / taxi to get into the city centre, however we did not find this to be a problem. I would recommend this B&B to family and friends without reservation. Enjoy.

We stayed at 23 mayfield gardens for a week-end get-away in January. In all honesty, pictures don't do it justice at all! After getting a bit lost in Edimburgh, we finally made it there, and what a delightful surprise. Upon entrance, it is a beautiful home with so much attention to detail. What's not to love in the combination of chesterfield sofas and fire place in the club room, the special honesty bar, elegant breakfast room and last but not least, the most beautiful bedroom with a four poster bed. Ross was the best host, giving us tips and directions on what to see in Edimburgh (It was our very first trip there) and we were extremely delighted by the special attention for a birthday occasion. All in all, it is a place we shall more than gladly return to next time we go to Edimburgh!! (The breakfast is to die for, thanks to Kathlyn's amazing cooking)

Thank you again for everything!

The house has been beautifully restored with great attention to detail.
The breakfast was excellent, presented so attractively it was a shame to eat it!
Ross is a great host, very helpful and welcoming.
Highly recommended, I'll definitely stay here again.

A beautifully renovated period guest house. All the rooms have been decorated and furnished to a very high standard with crisp white linens and fresh fluffy towels. Ross, the owner, was an exceptionally warm, welcoming host. Breakfast was wonderful - perfectly cooked, hot and tasty. The porridge was to die for! I only stayed for one night with a friend but can't wait to go back. I am reluctantly recommending this guest house above all others in the knowledge that it may be fully booked next time I want to stay!! An added bonus is plenty of free parking - very useful in Edinburgh.

Room Tip: No matter which room you choose you will not be disappointed.

We could not fault our stay at 23 Mayfield from the moment we arrived we knew we had picked a gem of a place to stay in Edinburgh. Ross was simply the perfect host and immediately made us feel very welcome and offered us the feature room for a small upgrade charge, the Grand Jacobean with 4 poster bed and Chesterfield armchairs was more 5 star hotel suite than what you would expect in any B&B, certainly any we've ever been to before. The finishing in this room and throughout the house was so well done in keeping with the Victorian architecture with modern features dotted here and there.
The breakfast was simply fit for a King, again not experienced this quality before with a full choice of options available...including Scottish favourites of haggis and black pudding! We never got to experience the hot tub spa in the garden but thought we'd better save something for our return trip in the future:) and will definitely be recommending to our friends! Thanks Ross for great weekend!

Room Tip: A little extra for the Grand Jacobean you won't regret it!

The hospitality here is fabulous. My wife and I stayed several times while we were working in Northern England and when visiting Edinburgh with our family. Newly renovated, the rooms are spacious and well docorated, very well maintained and cleaniless is superb. The breakfasts in the morning our fantastic and Ross is very helpful in getting you information about getting around town. The only minor downside I would say is that it is not in the heart of the old town but this is more than easily made up for by a quick cab ride to the royal mile. You can walk into the old town but it is about 20-30 min walk depending on your pace. Great value for the price of the rooms, upstair sweet is setup as a family room and contains a WI, great for a rainy night in for some fun. Definately worth checking out, you wont find much better for sure.

Room Tip: Upstairs sweet is great for a family outing, otherwise all the rooms are superb!
