I chose the Dunstane City based on the price and location. My trip was a mixture of business and pleasure and the location was convenient for my business meetings, visiting family, and access to the train station and airport.
There were no rooms left at the "House" when I booked so I stayed at the "City". The room was a bit smaller than it looked on the website and was at the back on the first floor so I heard people coming and going quite a bit on my first night when I went to bed early. I also heard someone's dog barking all night (bring the dog in for heaven's sake!) This was obviously not the hotel's fault but I had to leave my window open since Edinburgh was experiencing a heat wave if you can believe it. Again, not the hotel's fault and different circumstances would have likely produced a better nights' sleep.
The room was very clean and was just big enough for a single business traveler. I didn't love the half shower door in the bathroom but that was really a minor inconvenience. I loved the Molton Brown bath products and the room was very bright.
The dash across the busy road to eat at the Skerries restaurant was a bit unnerving for the faint of heart (tip for North Americans: remember to look left not right :-)) but it was worth it. My meal was excellent and the service was attentive but not obsequious. The food at breakfast was also very good and the service there was also friendly and attentive.
Because my room wasn't very big I made myself at home in the sitting area of the breakfast room, ordered a glass of wine, and made notes and sent emails while the lone staffer set up for breakfast. I felt completely comfortable and she gave me some great recommendations, including an excellent florist nearby so that I could arrive at my Aunt and Uncle's place with something nice, and some lunch, dinner and pub options for business and pleasure.
I would stay again, although I would probably stay across the street at the "House", but for the price in a city as expensive as Edinburgh I was very happy with my stay.
