If they can keep the standards up and the rates down this will be a real winner!
I booked the room just two days in advance when I couldn’t stay at an apartment because of mice on the floor above!! Well, I have to say that I was very lucky indeed. The flexible rate was £237 for a 3-night stay but when I checked online the following day this had gone down so I cheekily rebooked and saved myself £20!
Unlike many “no frills” hotels, the rate included continental breakfast which was perfectly adequate and served in a very attractive room on the lower ground floor.
The hotel has only been open six weeks so it is lovely and new and despite being only one street away from the bustle of the Royal Mile, it is also surprisingly quiet. In fact the odd-numbered rooms at the rear overlook the Catholic Church – a beautiful building with a very pleasant garden.
The staff were all local and extremely friendly and helpful.
You need to use your room key to access the lift and staircase so security is good.
On Wednesday and Thursday nights the hotel was very quiet but on Friday there were a few noisy guests. However, Edinburgh is a city with a drinking culture so this is a likely hazard in any accommodation, especially at the weekends!
If you don’t know the Old Town area, be warned that it is very hilly! If you look at the map it is only a short walk from Waverley Station (also the airport bus terminus) but Cockburn Street which takes you up to the Royal Mile is VERY steep – so that’s why it’s s-shaped! Then it’s a steep hill down Blackfriars Street to Cowgate. So if you have a lot of luggage a taxi fare will be money well spent.
There is an internet café about 50 metres away in Blackfriars Street which charges £1 for 30 minutes. The computers are quite slow and it’s probably aimed at backpackers from the hostel up the road, but fine for a quick surf or check of your e-mail.
You are spoilt for choice when it comes to restaurants, bars and cafes - and if you are on a really tight budget there is an M&S Food shop on the station concourse!
If you want to rent a car I can recommend Enterprise in Annandale Street. The daily rates are reasonable, the excess can be reduced to zero and they will pick you up from your hotel. Although, having said that, they were short staffed and paid for me to get a taxi there instead!
If it wasn’t for a 5.10 am fire alarm which left us standing outside in the street in our nightclothes it would have been just about perfect!
PS: If you are looking for something a bit different, I throughly enjoyed the Camera Obscura which is about a 10-minute walk towards the Castle. Unique, quirky and great fun!
